Mark Arthur Reed (born January 4, 1955) is an American physicist and professor at Yale University.
For demonstrating the first zero-dimensional electronic device that had completely quantified energy states, he coined the term quantum dots.
Reed's research interests include electronic transport in nanoscale and mesoscopic systems, chemically fabricated materials and assemblies, optical electronics, biosensors, and nanofluidics.
He is the author of more than 200 books, has hosted over 75 plenary and over 400 invited talks, and he holds 33 US and foreign patents on quantum effects, heterojunction, and molecular devices.
He served as the Editor in Chief of the journal Nanotechnology (2009-2019), the journal's presenter, and he has served in several other editorial and advisory board positions. Reed earned his Ph.D. from Syracuse University in 1983.
He worked at Texas Instruments from 1983 to 1990, where he demonstrated the first quantum dot device.
He has been at Yale School of Engineering and Applied Science since 1990, where he currently holds the Harold Hodgkinson Chair of Engineering and Applied Science.
Reed has been elected to the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the World for the first conductance measurement of a single molecule, the first single molecule transistor, and the design of CMOS nanowire biosensors.
He has received a variety of awards, including the Nobel Laurel (2003), the IEEE Young Scientist Award for Advancement of Basic and Applied Science, (1990), the Hayward Prize for Applied Science (2003), Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (2005), and a Finalist for the World Technology Award (2009). On August 24, 1996, he married Elizabeth Schaefer.
