Mark Lewin Career

Professional wrestling career

Danny McShain, Lewin's brother-in-law, had trained him to wrestle. He appeared in 1953 at the age of 16.

Lewin was a hit early on in a matinee-idol babyface tag team with Don Curtis, who was headlining in major markets such as New York and Chicago. The team's brief heel turn was a surprise to its many followers. In the early 1960s, the team was disbanded, and Mark began a singles career.

Mark first tried out the "Maniac"/"Mad" Mark Lewin persona in 1963, which continued to be alternating with his 'normal' babyface persona for the remainder of his life. He wrestled in Australia and New Zealand in the 1960s and 1970s with a lot of success, especially in New Zealand, where he attracted huge audiences during the tours. With King Curtis Iaukea, he regularly formed a tag team in Australia and New Zealand. Terry Funk, a fellow wildman, and The Sheik and another wildman, spent time in Detroit. Lewin also wrestled in Vancouver with NWA All Star Wrestling, where he competed with Gene Kiniski and "Bulldog" Bob Brown and twice captured the Pacific Coast Heavyweight title.

He had a lot of success in World Class Championship Wrestling in the late 1970s and early 1980s before heading to Florida Championship Wrestling, where he joined Kevin Sullivan's "cult" as The Purple Haze, a twisted of the 'Maniac' gimmick. Lewin appeared at wrestling's first Pay-Per-View event, which was won by Kevin Sullivan and his co-workers.

Lewin worked as a booker for Jim Barnett in Australia.

In the 1980s, he was one of Sabu's most popular opponents.

Lewin retired in 1988, but he returned to work with Eddie Jr. and Thomas Farhat in mid 2003 to begin the All World Wrestling Association/Big Time Wrestling Championships.
