Mark Alexandrovich Ivanir (born on September 6, 1968) is a Ukrainian-born Israeli actor.

Early life

Ivanir was born in Chernovtsi (now Chernivtsi), Ukraine's Ukrainian SSR. In 1972, his family immigrated to Israel and settled in the Bnei Brak neighborhood. Alexander's father, Alexander, was an English teacher, and his mother, Malka, a German teacher, was a German teacher. Meshulem Surkis, his maternal grandfather, was a Yiddish writer, reporter, actor, and theatre critic who was a well-known protester in the Yiddish cultural world. He was raised in a multilingual household, speaking Hebrew, Ukrainian, and Russian, and then learned English.

Operation Joshua, one of two IDF operations to bring Ethiopian Jews from Sudanese refugee camps to Israel, saw him serving in Israel. After completing his service, he turned down a Mossad job offer. He briefly studied medicine before deciding to work in the performing arts. He spent two years in a circus school, toured around Europe, performing on the streets as a clown, and then joined Cirque Pawelles in Paris. Mark began formal theatre under legendary Israeli director Nissan Nativ, appearing at the Cameri Theatre and Israeli Opera after leaving the circus.

Personal life

Maya Raz, an IDF broadcaster, is Ivanir's wife. Romi Aboulafia, actress, and journalist Menashe Raz are among his sister-in-laws, while his father-in-law is journalist Menashe Raz. He has two children and lives in Los Angeles with his family.

Ivanir is an excellent in Hebrew, Russian, English, Ukrainian, French, and Yiddish, as well as German and Arabic. His multi-lingualism is often a feature of his careers.

Career

Ivanir had his first film role in 1988 action film Iron Eagle II, directed by Sidney J. Furie. The film, which was shot in Israel by a Canadian-Israeli-American coproduction, featured an international cast. Mikhail Balyonev, a Soviet army serviceman, was Ivanir's favorite.

Following his time with Nativ, Ivanir joined the Gesher Theater, a Tel Aviv-based firm made up of emigrants from the former Soviet Union. Gesher became Israel's top theatre company within two years and was hailed by the London Times as "one of the top theatre companies in the country" by that time. Ivanir translated and adapted eight foreign-language plays into Hebrew for the company, using his experience in many languages. He then migrated to London to study under Philippe Gaulier at the Complicité.

Ivanir's first big film appearance came in Steven Spielberg's 1993 Oscar-winning epic Schindler's List, in which he appeared Marcel Goldberg. He returned to Spielberg twice, first for a cameo appearance in The Terminal and then for The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of Unicorn. Ivanir appeared in Robert De Niro's 2006 film The Good Shepherd, for which he received the Silver Bear Award at the Berlin Film Festival, before appearing in Barry Levinson's What Just Happened, this time alongside De Niro.

He appeared in Universal's Johnny English Reborn, Universal's Big Miracle, and 360 in 2011.

In fall 2012, his best work to date was on the critically acclaimed A Late Quartet, which was released from RKO pictures in the United States. The film was selected as one of the New York Daily News Top 10 Films of the Year. Daniel Lerner, the first violin of the string quartet, was portrayed by Ivanir, Catherine Keener, and Christopher Walken.

Ivanir played a recurring role on Homeland in 2016 as Russian intelligence agent Ivan Krupin. The season was also favored for the SAG Awards and Emmy's.

He appeared in "Bye Bye Germany" and recurred on Amazon's "Transparent" in 2017. As of August 2019, Amazon Prime is available around the world, with Ivanir playing Zvika Granot.

He co-starred in Entebbe, directed by José Padilha, and Bill Hader's HBO comedy Barry, in which he appeared as three Chechen brothers in 2018. Sir Ben Kingsley, Chris Evans, and Greg Kinnear all appeared in The Red Sea Diving Resort as the head of the Mossad.
