He began his career in Cincinnati, Ohio, and is now based in Los Angeles, California, with 12 billion total video views and 24.6 million viewers as of November 2019.

Fischbach specializes in Let's Play videos, which are mainly of survival horror video games.

Personal life

Fischbach was born at the Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Cliffton M. Fischbach (1941–2008), a German American who served in the United States Army, and Sunok Frank (born 1964), a retired Korean nurse. When his father was stationed in Korea, his parents met. His family immigrated to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he was raised after he was born. He grew up in Milford, Ohio, and attended Milford High School, where he was a member of the school's marching band, where he performed trumpet. Jason Thomas "Tom" Fischbach, an artist and author of the webcomic Twokinds, has an older brother. Although Tom Fischbach appears in certain films, he avoids allowing his face to be filmed.

Fischbach studied biomedical engineering at the University of Cincinnati, but he left to pursue his YouTube career.

Miranda Cracraft, Fischbach's step-niece, was killed in a car crash on June 19, 2018. Fischbach released a video with her father on June 26, 2018, thanking their fanbase. He raised more than $79,000 for Cracraft's funeral via GoFundMe.

Fischbach described himself as a "liberal" although not supporting a particular political party. Following the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, he has voiced support for universal health care and tighter gun control. Fischbach, a supporter of the LGBT rights campaign, has raised funds for the Human Rights Campaign in one of his charity live streams. He condemned George Floyd's assassination in 2020. Fischbach is best known for his playthroughs of indie and horror games, including the Five Nights at Freddy's series, Amnesia: The Dark Descent and its sequel, Garry's Mod, Happy Wheels, Surgeon Simulator, SCP – among others.

Fischbach has worked on sketch comedy and gaming videos with a variety of YouTubers, including CrankGameplays, Jacksepticeye, LordMinion777, Muyskerm, PewDiePie, Matthias, Game Grumps, Cyndago, Yamimash, CaptainSparklez, Egoraptor, and LixianTV, who now works as his editor. He has also worked with celebrities like Jack Black and Jimmy Kimmel.

Charity live streams, which he plays games while campaigning and collecting funds for various charities, including Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, and the Best Friends Animal Society are a staple on Fischbach's channel.

Fischbach first appeared on YouTube on March 6, 2012, establishing a channel under the name "Markiplier" and releasing his first video on April 4, 2012. Fischbach's original plan for the channel was sketch comedy, in which he'd be portrayed all of the characters in the sketches. The name "Markiplier" was coined to denote a portmanteau of Mark and multiplier, which resulted in the creation of the word "Markiplier." Fischbach revealed in 2011 that he wanted to move to Los Angeles, California, to be closer to other YouTube channels for his channel, such as the YouTube Space and other content creators. Fischbach's first appearance in August 2014, becoming his most popular playthrough to date, with over 100 million viewers as of February 2022. Fischbach appeared in other FNAF games, as well as a cameo in Five Nights at Freddy's AR: Special Delivery, thanks to the series's popularity.

Jenna Mae, a YouTuber, appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Following backlash Kimmel received over jokes he made about YouTube and Let's Play videos in September, the comedian returned in September 2015. Fischbach, along with YouTuber Daniel Kyre and Ryan Magee, who created and operated YouTube sketch comedy and music website Cyndago, began in 2015. After transferring to Los Angeles, Matt Watson from Kids w/ Problems later joined Cyndago. Their work was known for having unexpected endings and a slew of sad, often disturbing, humor. Following Daniel Kyre's death, Cyndago disbanded. The group had made forty sketches and fourteen original songs at the time of its disbandment, several of which featured Fischbach. Fischbach went on hiatus from September 17, 2015 to October 5, 2015, after the death of Daniel Kyre and disbandment of Cyndago. On October 15, 2015, he returned and attracted ten million viewers.

With The Legend of Korra voice actor Janet Varney, Fischbach co-hosted the 2015 South by Southwest Gaming Awards, and was featured on YouTube Rewind.

Fischbach changed some of his attention away from comedy sketches in 2016, demonstrating his aspiration of improvisational theatre. A Date with Markiplier, a popular interactive Choose Your Own Adventure video released in 2017, which was well received by fans. Fischbach's YouTube channel had more than 20 million viewers on March 29, 2018.

Fischbach also published a new Choose Your Own Adventure-style tale in October 2019, a YouTube Originals feature called A Date With Markiplier. The film was created by Fischbach and Rooster Teeth, and it includes 31 possible endings as well as videos from other YouTubers such as Rosanna Pansino, Matthew Patrick, and Game Grumps.

Fischbach, a YouTuber, launched Unus Annus, a YouTube channel that planned to post a video every day for one year, but it will be decommissioned along with its videos on November 15, 2019. The channel soared to early success, gaining 1 million subscribers in the first 5 days and 4.56 million in less than 5 minutes, with over 11.5 million video views in its first week. Fischbach and Nestor's channel was taken down by Fischbach and Nestor on November 14, 2020, 12:00 a.m. PST, following a final 12-hour live stream that peaked at over 1.5 million concurrent viewers.
