Marija Leiko Career

Life and film career

Leiko performed in the German big screen first (1917), Kain (1918), Ewiger Strom (191919), Die Frau im Käfig (1919) and Lola Montez (1919) as the dancer.

Leiko resigned from film acting as the silent movie period came to an end. She returned to Latvia after the 1933 Nazi seizure of power. In 1935, she entered the Soviet Union and stayed in Moscow to work with the Latvian State Theatre.

During the so-called "Latvian Operation" the theatre was closed, and Leiko was arrested on suspicion of being a "Latvian nationalist conspiracy" during the 1930s. At Butovo, near Moscow, on February 3, 1938, she was shot and buried in a mass grave at the undercover NKVD killing field.

Maria Leiko was posthumously rehabilitated for the lack of a criminal record (corpus delicti). On May 12, 1958, she was recalled for the absence of a criminal (corpus delicti).
