Her clients have included Emma Thompson, Scarlett Johansson, Angelina Jolie, and Victoria Beckham, who has modelled for her at London Fashion Week.
Personal life
Grachvogel married Mike Simcock, an investment banker, on her 40th birthday in July 2009. She gave birth to a son in March 2010.
Early life and career
Maria Grachvogel was born in London to a Polish father and an Irish mother. She was a teen designer at heart, launching her first collection at the age of 14. Following graduation, she started a career in the City to raise money to start her own company by passing a London Stock Exchange exam at the age of 17.
Design career
Grachvogel's first fashion venture was a collaboration with a friend and fellow designer. She returned to work in the city for a short time after the partnership ended, but within six months she resumed designing. Age 21, she founded her own business in January 1991, with a range of nine styles. She appeared at London Fashion Week for the first time in 1994 and 1995, staging her first catwalk show there.
Victoria Beckham's appearance as a model in London Fashion Week's February 2000 catwalk show attracted worldwide notice. Beckham debuted in green satin hot pants, followed by a flamenco-styled crimson gown, and then reappered at the end of the performance in a long off-the-shoulder red gown.
Grachvogel gained attention in the fall of this year when she created a dress hand-sewn with 2,000 diamonds worth about $250,000 for her September exhibition. The dress was a long black silk evening gown with the diamonds on the bodice, with the diamonds embedded in rows on the front. The diamonds were set in 18-carat gold and weighed in at 190 carats. Jodie Kidd was the dress modelled and performed at the end of the show, and she was the show's finale.
Grachvogel established her store in 2001 and is based in Sloane Street, London. "Magic Pants" trousers with no pockets or side seams are among her designs' intended to give the wearer a smooth silhouette. The store relocated to Culford Gardens, London, in 2011.
