Early life

Bello was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania, on April 18, 1967, to Kathy, a school nurse and tutor, and Joe Bello, a builder. Her father, an Italian immigrant, has roots in Montella, Italy, and her mother is a Polish American. She grew up in a working-class Catholic family and graduated from Archbishop John Carroll High School in Radnor, Pennsylvania. At Villanova University, she earned a degree in political science. Bello honed her acting abilities in a number of New York theater productions following her graduation.

Personal life

Bello and her estranged son Dan McDermott have a son Jackson. Clare Munn, her then-partner, shared a similar-sex relationship in November 2013. Whatever...Love Is Love: Questioning the Labels We Give Ourselves is a book that was published by Dey Street Books on April 28, 2015.

Career

Bello's early television appearances include episodes of The Commish (1991), Due South (1994), Nowhere Man (1995), Misery Loves Company (1995), and ER (1997–1998). Her breakthrough came when she was cast as Mrs. Smith in the TV series spy drama Mr. & Mrs. Smith, but the show was cancelled after eight weeks. She appeared in the final three episodes of the third season of ER as pediatrician Dr. Anna Del Amico, as well as a regular cast member during the fourth season of the medical drama.

Bello went on to film, with a role in Coyote Ugly (2000). She was nominated twice for Best Supporting Actress in The Cooler (2003) and Best Actress in A History of Violence (2005). In the 2005 film Assault on Precinct 13, a remake of John Carpenter's original 1976 film, she appeared in The Jane Austen Book Club as Jocelyn and as Dr. Alex Sabian. Evelyn O'Connell appeared in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in 2008, replacing Rachel Weisz. Bello began developing a drama for HBO in December 2008. Bello intended to serve as an executive producer in addition to acting in the new series. She appeared in Samuel Goldwyn Films' 2009 drama The Yellow Handkerchief, which was released in theatres on February 26, 2010.

Bello's guest appeared in two episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 2010. She appeared in the television series Prime Suspect, which was cancelled after 13 episodes. She joined the CQ Matrix Company in 2011 to support clients achieve "transformative living and the power of intelligent exchange" by raising their communication quotient.
