Margaret Colin (born May 26, 1958) is an American actress.

Margo Hughes on As the World Turns and Eleanor Waldorf-Rose on Gossip Girl are two of her roles.

Early life

Margaret Colin was born in Brooklyn, New York City, and was raised on Long Island in Baldwin, New York. She is of Irish descent and was raised in a Catholic family; she graduated from Baldwin Senior High School in 1976 and then attended Hofstra University.

Personal life

On As the World Turns, Colin met actress Justin Deas when he played her love interest, Tom Hughes, in As the World Turns. They were married in January 1988. Sam and Joe are the couple's second children, and Colin is the stepmother of her husband's daughter from his first marriage. In the late 1990s, the family migrated to Upper Montclair, New Jersey.

She is a feminist campaigner and served as the honorary co-chair of Feminists for Life, an anti-abortion group that opposes abortion. Colin is an honorary board member of the group Feminists for Nonviolent Choices.

Career

Colin began her acting career in the soap opera The Edge of Night, portraying a heiress and a former terrorist. Her character survived seven murder attempts and ended up marrying her stepbrother in seven months on the show. Margo Montgomery, a woman whose role spanned almost 30 years, stayed on As the World Turns for a longer period.

She has appeared on a number of primetime television shows, beginning with Foley Square, Leg Work, and several early episodes of Chicago Hope. On the 1999 film Now and Again, Lisa Wiseman appeared as Lisa Wiseman, alongside Eric Close and Dennis Haysbert. She appeared in "The Orphanage" on Law & Order in 2003, portraying a mother/bakery owner who was later arrested for aiding a murder.

Colin appeared on the teen drama television series Gossip Girl from 2007 to 2012. Eleanor was played by One Life to Live actress Florencia Lozano in the pilot episode.

Colin has appeared in a number of films, some of which include Anything Wild (1986), Three Men and a Baby (1987), The Butcher's Wife (1991), The Devil's Own (1996), Unfaithful (2002), and First Daughter (2004). She appeared in Jackie: An American Life, in which she appeared Jacqueline Kennedy.

Colin smoked her way into the second half of the show on Broadway in defiance of the state's smoking ban during her 2003 appearance. She gave up smoking after the play ended.

Colin appeared as a recurring character in the HBO comedy series Veep's sixth season, portraying fictional CBS News anchor Jane McCabe. Colin, as well as her co-stars, received the Screen Actor Guild Award for Outstanding Contribution by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. In 2019, she reprised her role as McCabe in Veep's seventh season premiere and later in the series's finale.

In the 2018 revival of Carousel, Colin appeared on Broadway as Mrs. Mullin.
