Marc Jacobs Career

Career

Jacobs began working as a stockboy at Charivari, a now defunct avant-garde clothing store in New York City, at the age of 15. He created and sold his first line of hand-knit sweaters while still in Parsons. He also created his first collection for Reuben Thomas, Inc. under the Sketchbook brand. Jacobs Duffy Designs was founded by Robert Duffy, Jacobs' creative collaborator and business partner since the 1980s.

Jacobs' first collection branded with the Marc Jacobs brand was launched in 1986, backed by Onward Kashiyama USA, Inc. The Council of Fashion Designers of America's Perry Ellis Award for "New Fashion Talent" in 1987, he was the youngest designer to have ever been lauded with the highest accolade in the fashion industry. Following the death of its namesake and founder, Jacobs and Duffy joined Perry Ellis' women's design unit as creative director/vice president and president in 1988. In addition, Jacobs oversaw the creation of the various women's licensees. The Council of Fashion Designers of America awarded Jacobs with the Women's Designer of the Year Award in 1992. He conceived a "grunge" collection for Perry Ellis in the same year, which resulted in his departure.

Jacobs Duffy Designs Inc., a licensed and design firm, established Marc Jacobs International Company, L.P., in the fall of 1993. Jacobs' first complete collection of menswear appeared in 1994. Jacobs was appointed Louis Vuitton's creative director in 1997, where he introduced the company's first ready-to-wear clothing collection. Stephen Sprouse, Takashi Murakami, and most recently American artist Kanye West have collaborated on Louis Vuitton collections, including Stephen Sprouse, Takashi Murakami, and more recently American artist Kanye West.

Jacobs introduced Marc by Marc Jacobs, his second line in 2001. Look was the first Marc Jacobs ready-to-wear license holder in Japan in 2005, with a retail value of €50 million. Jacobs introduced a new line of body-splash fragrances in ten-ounce bottles that are sold by Coty in 2006. Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton, a 2007 documentary film about Jacobs, was released by filmmaker Loc Prigent. Jacobs launched his famous Daisy line of perfumes in 2007. Jacobs was accused in February 2008 of plagiarizing a scarf design created in the 1950s by Swedish designer Gösta Olofsson. Jacobs settled the matter by giving Olofsson's son monetary compensation. Jacobs began a shirt in 2009 that was sold at his stores, demanding that gay marriage be recognized as legitimate. Jacobs co-hosted, with model Kate Moss, a "model and muse" gala for the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in May 2009.

Jacobs sued Ed Hardy in February 2010 for infringing on one of his embroidered handbags' designs. Jacobs, the patron of the Mercedes-Benz Berlin Fashion Week in July 2011, was the patron of the young talent award "Designer for Tomorrow by Peek & Cloppenburg." Jacob and the juryboard selected the five finalists for a personal consultation by Jacobs. At the DfT award show, the juryboard and Jacobs selected the winner of 2011. Jacobs could replace John Galliano as the artistic director of Christian Dior in August 2011. Jacobs "strongly denied rumors that he was going to move to Christian Dior" in January 2012, according to The Daily Telegraph, but rumors persist.

Jacobs was named the new creative director for Diet Coke in February 2013. Jacobs would spend one year in honor of the brand's 30th anniversary. The fur used in several Marc Jacobs jackets in March 2013 was actually the fur from raccoon dogs from China.

Marc Jacobs would leave Louis Vuitton to concentrate on his own line in October 2013, after the Spring/Summer 2014 show.

On January 9, 2014, Jacobs' new Spring/Summer collection would include actress Miley Cyrus, photographed by David Sims.

It was announced on February 26, 2014, that actress Jessica Lange would be the new star of Marc Jacobs Beauty. In addition, Lange will be included in the brand's summer/Fall print-ad campaign shot by David Sims and will also appear in a short campaign film directed by Jacobs that will premiere online on May 5, 2014. Jacobs had dressed and interviewed Lange for Love Magazine's fifth anniversary issue, and she had her perform "Happy Days Are Here Again" as the soundtrack for his autumn/Winter 2014 show.

Jacobs decided to rely on social media to cast models for Marc by Marc Jacobs' Autumn/Winter 2014 campaign, which was also true for Spring/Summer 2015 with photographer David Sims, with models including Aaron Whitty, Abigail Lipp, Amy Woodman, Ana Viktoria, Ana Viktoria, Beth Trott, Nadia Kishlan, and Toks Adewetan.

LVMH reported in February 2018 that Baja East co-founder John Targon will join Marc Jacobs as "creative director of contemporary."

In association with the Council of Fashion Designers of America, Jacobs was presented with MTV's first "Fashion Trailblazer Award" at the Video Music Awards on August 26, 2019.

Jacobs unveiled Heaven, a polysexual line aimed at a younger audience but also blurring gender boundaries, in September 2020. All of the garments used brand logos to commemorate its past, while giving a fresh face to a younger, younger audience. In addition, the campaign featured young rising stars and trend setters, including beabadoobe and Iris Law.

In Summer 2013, there were 285 Marc Jacobs retail stores (including Marc by Marc Jacobs and Marc Jacobs Collection) in 60 countries. In December 2013, the new Marc Jacobs flagship store in Shanghai opened.

Jacobs' secondary brand Marc Jacobs closed in March 2015 in order to narrowly concentrate on the growth of his main brand and to attract a more wealthy target market.
