Mar Roxas Life

Manuel "Mar" Araneta Roxas II (Tagalog script: [ohas]; born May 13, 1957) is a Filipino politician who served as a Senator of the Philippines. He is the grandson and namesake of former Philippine President Manuel Roxas. He served in the Philippines Cabinet from 2012 to 2015. He served as the Secretary of Trade and Industry from 2000 to 2003, as well as Secretary of Transportation and Communications from 2011 to 2012. He is the son of former Senator Gerry Roxas.

Roxas began working as a banker in New York after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, raising venture capital funds for small and medium enterprises. From 1993 to 2000, he served as the Representative of Capiz's 1st District. After being appointed by President Joseph Estrada as Secretary of Trade and Industry, his stint as a congressman was cut short. He resigned from his post at the start of the EDSA revolution in 2001 but President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo later re-appointed him in her new cabinet. In the 2004 race, he resigned again to run for a Senator seat. Mr. Palengke was elected senator with 19 million votes, the most a national candidate has ever gained in a Philippine election at that time. Roxas co-authored the Expanded Value Added Tax Law (E-Vat).

He slid back to become a vice president in order to make room for fellow senator Benigno Aquino III, who ultimately prevailed. Roxas was defeated by PDP-Laban Mayor Jejomar Binay by a margin of 727,084 votes. He filed an electoral protest in the Philippines' Supreme Court, despite the fact that the tribunal is now the Presidential Electoral Tribunal. Roxas was named by President Aquino as Secretary of Transportation and Communications on June 7, 2011, deposing outgoing secretary Jose de Jesus. President Aquino nominated Jesse Robredo as the Secretary of Interior and Local Government on August 31, 2012, removing Jesse Robredo who died in a plane crash.

Roxas was the Liberal Party's standard bearer in the 2016 presidential election. He had been officially encouraged by President Aquino to continue the existing administration's changes, collectively dubbed Daang Matuwid ("straight path"), which he formally accepted on July 31, 2015. Roxas resigned as Secretary of the Interior and Local Government on August 3, 2015, in order to focus on his presidential campaign. Roxas renounced Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte on May 10, 2016, after finishing second in the election.

Roxas announced his return to politics after a two-year absence on October 15, 2018; the next day for Senator Benjamin in the 2019 Philippine Senate election. He finished 16th in the poll and failed to win a six-year term.
