Mamata Shankar was born on January 7, 1955, to the dancers Uday Shankar and Amala Shankar. She obtained her dancing and choreography training at the University of Shankar India Culture Centre, Calcutta, under Amala Shankar.

Career
Shankar made her film debut with Mrigayaa in 1976, which was directed by Mrinal Sen. The film received the National Film Award for Best Feature Film of the Year.
Shankar is married and operates the 'Mamata Shankar Ballet Troupe,' which was founded in 1986 and has travelled extensively around the world.
