Mamata Shankar (born 7 January 1955) is an Indian actress.

She is best known for her appearances in Bengali cinema.

Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen., Rituparno Ghosh, Buddhadeb Dasgupta, and Gautam Ghosh have all appeared in films directed by her.

In addition to being an actress, she is also a dancer and choreographer.

Early life and education

Mamata Shankar was born on January 7, 1955, to the dancers Uday Shankar and Amala Shankar. She obtained her dancing and choreography training at the University of Shankar India Culture Centre, Calcutta, under Amala Shankar.

Career

Shankar made her film debut with Mrigayaa in 1976, which was directed by Mrinal Sen. The film received the National Film Award for Best Feature Film of the Year.

Shankar is married and operates the 'Mamata Shankar Ballet Troupe,' which was founded in 1986 and has travelled extensively around the world. The troupe was founded in 1978 and performed its first performance, based on a Rabindranath Tagore piece, Chandalika, 1979. Horikhela, Aajker Ekalabya, Milap, Shikaar, Mother Earth, Amritasyaputra, and Sabari were among the first to follow it.
