Mal Anderson Career

Playing career

Anderson's best seasons were 1957 and 1958, when he first appeared in world No. 2 as an amateur. 2.

Anderson won the US Championships as an unseeded participant in 1957. He had reached the semifinals of the Australian Championships and won the French Championship doubles, teaming with Ashley Cooper in the man who lost in the final of the 1957 US Championships.

Anderson finished finalists at both the Australian Championships and US Championships in 1958, losing both times to Cooper.

Anderson became a successful actor in late 1958. He came fourth in the 4-man 1959 World Championship Tour behind Gonzales, Hoad, and Cooper, but he won five matches against Hoad. Anderson finished sixth place with Segura in the 1959 Ampol world series of tournaments. Anderson lost in the semi-finals to Hoad at the Forest Hills Tournament of Champions, part of the Ampol series. Anderson won the Wembley Championships later this season, defeating defending champion Frank Sedgman in the quarterfinals and Pancho Segura in the final. Before winning, Anderson saved match point against Segura. Anderson said after winning, he would quit pro tennis as soon as he had saved enough money to buy a farm in Australia. Anderson reached the semifinal where he defeated Hoad in the Sydney White City Tournament of Champions in December, which was also part of the Ampol series.

Following the 1963 Wembley tournament, Anderson revealed his retirement from the pro tour, citing eyesight difficulties.

Anderson appeared in another major final in 1972, when he was a finalist at the Australian Open, defeating Newcombe in a long five set quarterfinal and Metreveli in the semifinals before losing the final to Ken Rosewall in a long five set semifinal. He captured the Hong Kong Hardcourt championship in the same season as Geoff Masters defeated him in the semifinals and Pancho Gonzales in the final. He and John Newcombe won the Australian Open doubles title in 1973. Anderson's last significant tournament victory was the 1973 New South Wales Championships in Sydney White City (billed as Sydney International), where he defeated Hans Plotz, Phil Dent in five long sets, Colin Dibley in five sets, Newcombe in a close four sets semifinal, and Rosewall in three close sets.

Anderson appeared on four Australian Davis Cup teams in 1957, 1958, 1972, and 1973, the team winning twice (1957 and 1973).
