Maile O'Keefe Career

Gymnastics career

O'Keefe, then 11, was a level 9 gymnast. She attended a development camp at the Karolyi Ranch, where she had the opportunity to compete at an elite qualifier. She did well enough at the qualifier to be eligible for Junior Elite status, thus avoiding level ten completely.

At various national competitions, O'Keefe participated. At the 2014 and 2015 National Championships, she came in 13th and 17th respectively. In addition to the beam and floor titles, she had a breakthrough during the 2016 season, winning the all-around title in the Junior division at the 2016 United States National Gymnastics Championships.

O'Keefe won first place in the all-around and finished third on every event in March. She competed in the 2017 City of Jesolo Trophy in April. In Jesolo, she came in second place in the all-around competition, behind Gabby Perea. Also won bronze medals in the uneven bars and balance beam finals, as well as a silver medal in the floor exercise final. O'Keefe revealed in June that she had verbally committed to attend the University of Utah on a gymnastics scholarship. At the 2017 National Gymnastics Championships in August, she was crowned all-around. The United States' Olympic Gymnastics Competition was held in Japan in 2017 alongside silver medalist Emma Malabuyo. On floor, vault, and uneven bars, O'Keefe won gold in the all-around and on beam, as well as silver.

In February 2018, O'Keefe was named as the wildcard participant for the 2018 American Cup. O'Keefe came in third place in her senior international debut, with a score of 54.365, behind fellow American Morgan Hurd and Mai Murakami of Japan. To fix a ganglion cyst, O'Keefe underwent wrist surgery in the spring. She spent the remainder of the year recovering.

In early 2019, O'Keefe revealed that she had fallen back to level 10 after an investigation. In February, she was at the Brestyans' Las Vegas Invitational for the first time. Following the meeting, she announced that she had gained early admission to University of Utah and would be competing with their gymnastics team in the 2019–2020 season.

In March 2019, O'Keefe received her National Letter of Intent from the University of Utah. She joined Abby Paulson, Jillian Hoffman, and Jaedyn Rucker as the 2019-2021 freshman class.

O'Keefe made her NCAA debut in a match against the Kentucky Wildcats, where she competed on vault, uneven bars, and balance beam to assist Utah in defeating 196.425 to 195.350. She made her all-around debut at the inaugural Best of Utah meet against BYU, Southern Utah, and Utah State, where she helped Utah take first and finished third in the all-around.

O'Keefe participated in all four events against the Oklahoma Sooners, the defending national champions. Despite losing, O'Keefe claimed the all-around and balance beam titles with scores of 39.550 and 9.95 respectively. She was subsequently named as the week's Pac-12 gymnast of the week. O'Keefe was named as the Year's Pac-12 Gymnast of the Year after the regular season ended. O'Keefe competed in the Pac-12 Conference Championships in March. When winning the all-around competition and co-winning the uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise titles, she helped Utah finish first and co-wrote the uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise titles.

In April, O'Keefe competed at the NCAA Championships. She appeared in all four sports for Utah and finished 11th in the all-around after having minor issues with the balance beam. However, she came in first on both the uneven bars (tied with Maya Bordas of California) and on floor exercise (tied with Lexi Graber of Alabama and Anastasia Webb of Oklahoma). In addition, she helped Utah advance to the team finals. O'Keefe was the highest balance beam and uneven bars score of the day, helping Utah finish third, and Utah placed third.
