Acting career

Dixit made her film debut in 1984 with Rajshri Productions' drama Abodh, opposite Bengali actor Tapas Paul. The film's success on its first release, but critics were quick to her Dixit's performance, which earned her praise. "Madhuri excels in her role as the naive village girl who does not know what marriage really entails," Aakash Barvalia of Gomolo wrote. Awara Baap, her only release from 1985, flopped at the box office. During this time, a monochrome photograph of hers, shot by Gautam Rajadhyaksha, was published on the front of then-popular magazine Debonair, and she appeared as the cover girl of Filmfare in April 1986.

The dramas Swati (1986), Manav Hatya (1986), Hifazat (1987), and Uttar Dakshin (1987) were among Dixit's next four books. None of these films were well received, both critically and commercially. Hifazat was the first of many Dixit collaborations with Anil Kapoor. Dixit had film launches in 1988; two of them, Mohre, and Khatron Ke Khiladi, were commercial failures.

In 1988, Dixit appeared in Dayavan, a commercially successful film. In N. Chandra's action romance Tezaab opposite Anil Kapoor, she finally earned attention when she starred Mohini, an impoverished and miserable woman who is forced to dance to make money for her father. It went on to become the year's highest-grossing film and received her first Filmfare Award for Best Actress; Dixit's success established Dixit as a leading actress in Hindi cinema, and it was a turning point in her career. "Madhuri Dixit also gives a fine tuned appearance," Planet Bollywood's Akshay Shah said. Although she is best known for her dazzling dance performance Ek Do Teen, her performance has to be praised, particularly in the scenes where she is pitted against Anupam Kher."
