Madge Blake (née Cummings; born May 31, 1899 – February 19, 1969) was an American character actress best known for her appearance as Margaret Mondello on CBS/ABC's Leave It to Beaver, as Flora MacMichael on ABC's CBS/ABC sitcom Leave It to Beaver, and as Aunt Harriet Cooper in 96 episodes of ABC's Batman.
Following her role in An American in Paris, Gene Kelly had a special affection for her and included her in each of his films.
Early life
Blake was born in Kinsley, south-central Kansas, to Albert Cummings and the former Alice Stone. Despite her family's relocation from Kansas to Southern California, her father was a Methodist circuit rider who discouraged her from becoming an actress, so she did not start acting until later in life.
During World War II, Blake and her partner James Lincoln Blake worked in Utah on the construction of the atomic bomb and also operated as testing equipment for the Manhattan Project. The couple were given a certificate for their service from the US government.
Blake was a first cousin of actor Milburn Stone (her mother and brother were the same), who appeared in the role of Doc Adams on Gunsmoke Western film. She didn't begin to study acting until she was 50 years old when she enrolled at the Pasadena Playhouse and took advantage of Milburn Stone's wealth or connections in land acting. Blake appeared on Rod Cameron's City Detective and in Ray Milland's sitcom Meet Mr. McNutley in the second season as The Ray Milland Show in the middle of the 1950s. Blake appeared in four episodes of It's a Wonderful Life (1954-1956) on CBS, as well as in two episodes of CBS's The Christmas Bride (January Byington).
Acting career
Dora Bailey, a gushy gossip columnist, appeared in Singin' in the Rain (1952) and was a model for one of the fairies (Fauna) in Walt Disney's animated version of Sleeping Beauty (1959). In the 1959 pilot of CBS' Dennis the Menace, she appeared as Mrs. Porter, a babysitter. Around this time, she appeared in a guest-starring role in ABC's Guestward, Ho!, and Angel, starring Annie Fargé on CBS. In 1960, she appeared in "Tom Cuts Off the Credit," the first episode of the comedy "The Tom Ewell Show starring Tom Ewell. She appeared in the episode "A View of Murder" of the syndicated crime drama "The Brothers Brannagan" in 1961. Flora MacMichael of Blake was a romantic foil to Walter Brennan's Grandpa Amos McCoy on The Real McCoys, a sitcom about a mountain family relocating to Southern California.
She had appeared on Batman before her time as the president of the Jack Benny Club - Pasadena Chapter. Millie Brinkerhoff appeared in the episode "Instant Wedding" on NBC's 1963 military drama The Lieutenant starred Gary Lockwood, and Larry Mondello's mother played Leave It to Beaver. Blake appeared in the pilot episode of The Addams Family (broadcast in the United States in September 1964) as Miss Comstock, a government official from the Addams' children's kindergarten. In 1957, Blake appeared in a memorable episode of I Love Lucy with George Reeves guest-starring as Superman, as well as in a 1954 episode as store clerk Mrs. Mulford. On The Joey Bishop Exhibition from 1961 to 1964, she appeared as the mother of Joey Barnes. The Batman developers wanted to fire Blake for unknown reasons at one point. Adam West, who had lost her family, stood up for her and she maintained her career. He discovered a freshly baked cake in his dressing room the next day.
