Benjamin Hammond Haggerty (born June 19, 1983), also known as Macklemore (MAK-mor) (formerly Professor Macklemore), is an American rapper and songwriter from Seattle, Washington.

Early life and influences
Ben Haggerty was born in Seattle, Washington, on June 19, 1983, one of two sons born to Bill Haggerty and Julie Schott. Tim and his brother Tim were raised in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood. He is from Ireland and was raised Catholic. Haggerty was six years old when hip hop first came into his life via the Internet. In a YouTube interview, he listened to "parental advisory" music from the radio when he was an underage teen. He began writing lyrics at the age of 15.
Haggerty was listening to "a lot of East Coast underground hip hop" when he began to perform, including Hieroglyphics, Freestyle Fellowship, Aceyalone, Living Legends, Wu-Tang Clan, Mobb Deep, Nas, and Talib Kweli as his key influences. He was passionate about involving a younger audience with his music and became a part of "Gateways for Incarcerated Youth," where he led music workshops. Haggerty attended Garfield High School and Nathan Hale High School. He created the stage name "Professor Macklemore" for an art project involving a made-up superhero, and at Garfield, he formed Elevated Elements, a hip-hop group made up of others. In 2000, the group released Progress, a collection of songs.
Haggerty attended the College of Santa Fe for a year, later stating in an interview that "[i]t was a very pivotal moment in a variety of ways." I was rapping at Santa Fe, and that was where I got to be strong at it. He returned to Seattle after not being able to participate in the music program. In 2009, Haggerty earned his bachelor's degree at The Evergreen State College and completed his bachelor's degree.
Personal life
Macklemore admitted to heroin use and alcoholism in August 2008 and celebrated three years of sobriety before a brief relapse in 2011. In a 2012 documentary, he said he spent the majority of his youth fighting his heroin use and a destructive way of life:
Macklemore dedicated his song "My Oh My" to sportscaster Dave Niehaus, who died in November 2010 after a game against 50,000 viewers at Safeco Field. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis were each given a custom jersey with a Mariners patch as a result of their appearance. All proceeds from the album went to the Rainier Vista Boys and Girls Club, according to Ryan Lewis.

Career
Haggerty released a mixtape called Open Your Eyes in 2000 under the name Professor Macklemore, which was distributed to him and released on October 21, 2000. Haggerty stripped "Professor" from his name and began working on his first full-length collection, The Language of My World. The album was announced on January 1, 2005, with its lead single, "Love Song," being revealed the same day. Evan Roman, who would later go on to produce several more songs for Macklemore, appeared on "Love Song" on "Love Song."
In 2006, Haggerty first met his future collaborator Ryan Lewis. Lewis, who will have two albums with Haggerty as Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, spent a few years as a photographer on Macklemore's promotion. The two musicians will soon be good friends, but they will not fully implement their joint projects until 2009. The two bands, "White Privilege II," their second single on This Unruly Mess I've Made, debuted on January 22, 2016. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis released the album This Unruly Mess I've Made on February 26, 2016. Macklemore released two solo singles, "Drug Dealer" and "Wednesday Morning," two of which were also released in 2016. Macklemore raps about his prior heroin use and is included in a documentary that includes clips of Macklemore discussing drug use with President Barack Obama.
