Matthew "Mac" McClung (born January 6, 2000) is an American college basketball player for the Georgetown Hoyas of the Big East Conference.
McClung, a three-star recruit and one of Virginia's top-ranked high school players, gained national recognition in 2017 for his slam dunking skills.
Early life
McClung grew up in Gate City, Virginia, a tiny town of around 2,000 people in the Tri-Cities metropolitan area, where he first started playing football, a sport that is much more popular than basketball in Southwest Virginia. In a 2018 interview, family members recalled that McClung was incredibly athletic as a child. "Mac was just born with it," Marcus' father said of him. If you're making a bowl of cereal, you're going to make a contest." "He'd just come at you every day, no matter how small he was." Anna's older brother would add, "No matter how small he was." Mac's parents built a basement gym in their house, but he'd continue to use it as he grew up, but his dad would often exclude him from the gym to encourage Anna to work out unsisturbed.
When his mother Lenoir signed him up for a local youth league, he had his first introduction to basketball right before entering the seventh grade. "He ducked his head inside for a minute and practically never left," McClung's coach, Scott Vermillion, was recalled in 2018. McClung became interested in basketball and began training for the sport on a regular basis, with the intention of joining the National Basketball Association (NBA), and his father was ecstatic when he left football after his freshman year of high school. His shooting form improved after he broke his arm while snowboarding in eighth grade, according to McClung, and he hooned the technique with Greg Ervin, the former head coach at Gate City High.
Personal life
Marcus and Lenoir McClung's son, McClung, is the son of Marcus and Lenoir McClung. His umbilical cord was tightly tied around his neck during his birth; his father told him, "He was blue as a Smurf." He was released by the attending physicians quickly, and he was almost back to normalcy within minutes. Marcus' parents met at Virginia Tech, where he played football and Lenoir was a cheerleader. His father went on to become an attorney, serving as Commonwealth Attorney for Scott County, Virginia, in 2018, although at the time, his mother was still attending Gate City High. According to a 2018 Washington Post article as well as the one in The Undefeated, McClung's parents' history greatly aided him in his athletic pursuits. His father served as a mentor for a large portion of his childhood, and the family was also able to afford placing him on a Richmond-based AAU travel company. Anna, the VHSL's all-time goal scoring leader, continued to play the sport in Florida and Tennessee, while his uncle Seth competed with two Major League Baseball (MLB) teams. Correne and Collette, his aunts, both played Division 1 College Hockey. Correne has also competed with the Canadian National Team.
High school career
McClung made his first appearance at Gate City High School as a sophomore playing varsity basketball. Throughout the remainder of his high school career, he remained an acrobatic dunker. MaxPreps dubbed him "one of the country's most exciting players." In a loss to Dan River High School in the Virginia High School League on February 24, 2017, he scored a career-high 64 points (VHSL) Region 2A West tournament. On February 21, McClung tied for the first time in a single season in VHSL regional playoffs, defeating Iverson's record of 948 points in 25 games, five fewer than Iverson's previous record of 948 points in 25 games, which was five fewer than it took Iverson to record a new record. In an 80–65 championship victory over Staunton's Robert E. Lee High, he concluded his high school career with Gate City's first state championship, scoring 47 points in an 80-65 victory. The 47 points tied for the highest all-classes scoring record for a championship game contested by former NBA player JJ Redick. McClung's career included 1,153 points and 2,801 for his career, as well as a VHSL all-classes record, and the Herald Courier named him Player of the Year in Southwest Virginia. At the Ballislife All-American Game, he won the slam dunk competition.
