Lynda Bellingham Life

Lynda Bellingham, OBE (31 May 1948 – 19 October 2014) was an English actress, radio presenter, and writer perhaps best known for her appearances as the mother in the long-running series of "Oxo Family" British television advertisements between 1983 and 1999.

She is also known for her appearances in the drama series All Creatures Young and Small, Second Thoughts, and Faith in the Future.

She appeared on the ITV lunchtime chat show Loose Women between 2007 and 2011.

Early life

Bellingham was born Meredith Hughes in Montreal to a single mother, but she was turned down for adoption because she was born out of wedlock in a strict church-going family. She was adopted at four months of age. Bellingham attended Aylesbury High School and studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama.

Personal life

Bellingham was married three times, first in 1975 to film and theatre producer Greg Smith. According to Bellingham's 2010 autobiography, the marriage was primarily motivated by sex, with Smith later admitting to several affairs with other actresses, including some who sent nude photos to their homes.

Nunzio Peluso, with whom she had two sons, Michael and Robbie, was her second marriage (1981–96). By friend and fellow actor Christopher Biggins, the two were introduced to each other at the Italian restaurant La Famiglia in Chelsea, London, in the early 1980s. Following a whirlwind courtship and love, the couple married, but Peluso's jealousy of Bellingham's former lovers resulted in a string of altercations, fiancée contests, and continuing domestic violence against her. Bellingham was being mocked by Peluso and decided not to reveal the truth about her relationship out of fear of damaging her image in the advertisements. "I'm sure if my private life had been better," Bellingham wrote in her 2010 autobiography Lost & Found: My Story: "Maybe I would have enjoyed doing it more." I felt I was living a lie as it was. The irony was heartbreaking as the nation's favorite mom on camera and going home to an abusive household. "I was the Oxo mum, hiding behind closed doors, alienated from her friends and families." Bellingham and Bellingham divorced in 1996, giving her former husband half of what she owned though he continued to threaten her. Peluso's ex wife was banned from restraining orders in 2000 to keep him away from his ex wife.

Bellingham married Michael Pattemore, a timeshare salesman based in Spain, on May 31 in 2008, at St Stephen Walbrook on her 60th birthday.

Bellingham was named Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2014 New Year Honours for voluntary service to charitable giving.

Bellingham had been diagnosed with colorectal cancer on July 16, 2013, according to the newspaper. In a statement, she said she was "not going to die."

Bellingham reported in September 2014 that her lungs and liver cancer had metastasised, and that she had "months to live." She revealed in August 2014 that she had made the right decision to stop her chemotherapy in November in August 2014 in order to have "one last Christmas" with her family and die in January 2015. Bellingham died in a London hospital on October 19th, 2014, with her husband Michael by her side.

Bellingham's official website was taken down a few weeks before her death, with the note "We're really sorry; at the request of Lynda and Michael we've temporarily taken the website offline."

She died at St Bartholomew's Church in Crewkerne on November 3, 2014. Bellingham was buried in Crewkerne Townsend Cemetery afterwards. Lynda Bellingham-Pattemore is her headstone, and she is identified as Lynda Bellingham-Pattemore.
