Luke Farrell Kirby (born June 29, 1978) is an American-Canadian screen and stage actor.
In 2019, he won a Primetime Emmy Award for his guest role as Lenny Bruce on the critically acclaimed television series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
Early life
Kirby was born in Hamilton, Ontario, to American parents. His mother is from Brooklyn, New York, and his father grew up "along the eastern seaboard." His parents moved from New York City, New York, to Canada in 1974. Kirby studied drama at the National Theatre School of Canada, a theatre conservatory which focuses on classical works, and graduated in 2000.
Career
Since being accepted at The National Theatre School of Canada, Kirby has been performing since his youth. He started working on two separate projects: the CBS/Alliance mini-series Haven, and producer Léa Pool's film Lost and Delirious (2001).
Kirby appeared in the Factory Theatre's production of Geometry in Toronto, a role that earned him the Best Actor Award at the Dora Mavro Moore Awards. Patroclus in Theatre, directed by Peter Hall in New York City, was quickly followed by the role of Patroclus in Theatre for a New Audience's 2001 production of Troilus and Cressida.
Kirby appeared in the Women's Project Theater's production of Jump/Cut in 2006. Judith Thompson's debut of Habitat at the Canadian Stage was followed by Daniel Brooks' debut of The Good Life at the Tarragon Theatre (both in Toronto). He appeared in Defender of the Faith in New York, where he played the lead role in the Irish Repertory Theatre.
Jim in Halloween: Resurrection (2002) was Kirby's first film role. Lead roles in Peter Wellington's feature Luck and Mambo Italiano directed by Émile Gaudreault are among the film credits. Mambo Italiano was honoured with a standing ovation at the 2003 Toronto International Film Festival, earning Kirby a Canadian Comedy Award nomination. In Cruise/Wagner's feature film Shattered Glass, Kirby appeared in a scene written for him. In the Canadian film All Hat, he appeared in the lead role of Ray Dokes opposite Rachael Leigh Cook and Keith Carradine. Lindsay Lohan appeared in a film titled Labor Pains, which was a 2009 film role.
One of Kirby's favorite performances was the TMN/Showcase mini-series Slings and Arrows, starring Canadian actors and directed by Peter Wellington. Sex Traffic, a Channel 4 and CBC mini-series that aired in 2004, had him working with British director David Yates for which he received a Gemini nomination. In the same year, he received his second Gemini award for his guest appearance in the dramatic film The Eleventh Hour. Kirby appeared as a series regular in HBO's Tell Me You Love Me, directed by Patricia Rozema in the fall of 2005. In September 2007, HBO premiered the first season. Jimmy Burns appeared in the Canwest Global television series Cra$h & Burns from 2009 to 2010.
Kirby appeared in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Amazon's original series, as the comedian Lenny Bruce, for which he was given the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series.
Kirby appeared in the Off-Broadway play Judgment Day at Park Avenue Armory in New York from December 2019 to January 2020.
