Early life
Vargas was born in Las Matas de Santa Cruz, Costa Rica, in 1961. He grew up in a poor household. After meeting a local musician who showed him how to play guitar, he became interested in bachata music. Blas Durán and Eladio Santos inspired his style.
Career
Vargas debuted in the early 1980s on the bachata scene. He was one of the first bachata musicians to enter Latin America. Vargas, the first bachatero to use guitar pedals, is among bachata sound engineer Rafael Montilla's who came up with the idea. When recording his album El Maiz in 1991, Montilla added a chorus pedal to Vargas guitar. He is also known as the first bachatero to use humbucker pickups on acoustic electric guitars. Luis Vargas' first albums in the early 1980s were self-produced, promoted, and sold his first albums. Pedro Pimentel, Artemio Sánchez, and Antonio Carrasco, two local musicians, have boosted his music by local radio stations. Sony Discos (now Sony Music Latin) signed him in 1996 after issuing his music through an independent label named José Luis Records, which became Sony Music Latin) in 1996, releasing Volvio el Dolor in 1997. He is the first bachata artist to be signed to Sony Music Latin. Antony Santos, who is regarded by some as one of the most influential bachata players of all time, was his güira player. Vargas was Santos' guitar mentor. Santos and his friends became rivals as a result of Santos' departure from Vargas' group to create their own. They even changed diss tracks to one another. Among other songs, "El Envidioso," "El Brazo Largo," "El Gato Seco," "El Charlatan," and others are among others. Vargas is best known for his guitar licks and doble sentido (double play) on words. El Rey Supremo de la Bachata is his nicknamed El Rey Supremo de la Bachata, not to be confused with Aventura, Los Reyes de la Bachata Moderna. Luis Vargas has been credited as one of the groups' inspirations, although they have had clashes with Vargas in the past.
