Luis Fernando Muriel Fruto (born 16 April 1991) is a Colombian professional footballer who plays as a forward for Atalanta and the Colombia national team.
Muriel joined Udinese after beginning his career with Colombian side Deportivo Cali. During his first two seasons with the club, he was loaned out to Granada and Lecce respectively before returning to the club in 2012, where he was named Best Young Revelation award alongside Stephan El Shaarawy. Muriel joined Sampdoria in January 2015 after scoring 15 goals in 57 appearances. He spent two-and-a-half seasons with the club, scoring 21 goals in 79 league appearances before joining Sevilla in 2017. He was sent back to Italy on loan with Fiorentina in January 2019. Muriel was signed by Atalanta's Serie A side in June 2019 for a reported €18 million. For the first time in the club's history, Muriel scored 18 league goals and guided Atalanta to UEFA Champions League qualifying. He came in third best goalscorer in Serie A in the following year, behind Romelu Lukaku and Cristiano Ronaldo. As a result, Atalanta qualified for two consecutive Champions League tournaments; as a result of his efforts, Muriel was selected in the 2020-21 Serie A Team of the Year.
Muriel is currently a Colombian international, having represented his country at a global level since 2012. He made his senior debut in June 2012 against Ecuador in a World Cup qualifier, and scored his first goal against Guatemala the following year. He appeared in the Copa América's 2015, 2019, and 2021 editions as well as the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Club career
Muriel joined Colombian Primera A side Deportivo Cali in January 2009 after spending his formative years with Atlético Junior. On July 12, 2009, he made his first appearance for the year before scoring nine goals in ten appearances the following season. In comparison to former Brazil striker Ronaldo, Muriel's early form for Deportivo Cali, which included a hat-trick against Once Caldas in his third match, earned him the nickname "the Colombian Ronaldo," and midway through the season, he was signed by Italian Serie A team Udinese.
The signing of Muriel by Udinese was completed on May 30th, 2010 for a reported €1.5 million. Udinese obtained 70% of Muriel's playing rights under the terms of the transfer agreement, with the remaining 30% retained by Deportivo. Shortly after his arrival in Udine, however, he was loaned to Segunda División Granada.
On July 12, 2010, Muriel completed his loan transfer to Granada. For the first time in 35 years, the club gained promotion to La Liga, but Muriel's tenure was marred by his inability, as he made only seven appearances and failed to score.
Muriel was loaned out again for the following season to Lecce, after the completion of his Granada loan. In a 2–0 loss to Palermo on Sunday, he made his first appearance for the club in October 27th, serving as a second-half replacement for Daniele Corvia. Muriel was suspended for two bookable offences on his first month with the club against Cesena. Lecce eked out a 1–0 victory, but despite a goal from fellow countryman and Udinese-loane Juan Cuadrado, the team maintained their victory. He came to an end of the season with a total of seven goals in 29 appearances, but his efforts were insufficient to keep Lecce from being relegated to Serie B. His form during the season attracted the attention of A.C. Milan and Internazionale, with both clubs expressing formal requests to sign him, but Muriel announced that he would return to Udinese.
Despite scoring four goals against Arta Cedarchis in a pre-season friendly, Muriel's poor physical fitness on his return to Udinese drew Francesco Guidolin's ire, with the club's chief claiming he needed to lose 5 pounds (2.3 kg). He was able to get back to shape for the season and made his debut in a 2–1 loss against Fiorentina on August 25, 2012, with Maicosuel as the lead. He agreed to a contract extension the following month after completing an improved five-year contract with the club. Muriel received the Serie A Best Young Revelation award alongside Milan's Stephan El Shaarawy in 2012 in honor of his work with Lecce and Udinese the previous year. Despite missing nearly four months of football due to a hairline fracture in his left femur, he had scored 11 goals in 22 Serie A appearances by the end of the season.
Muriel scored twice in his first European goals in the 2013-14 UEFA Europa League's qualifying rounds, scoring twice in a 3–1 win over iroki Brijeg and scoring twice in his first league match of the season against Lazio, the reigning Coppa Italia champions. His form, however, slowed as he struggled with weight and injuries, and over the next season and a half, he scored just four goals in 35 league appearances, including a stint without goals in 11 games from the start of the 2014–15 season. He scored 15 goals in 57 appearances for the club before heading to Sampdoria in 2015.
Despite his struggles with Udinese, Sampdoria completed the double loan signings of Muriel and teammate Andrea Coda on January 22, 2015, with the promise to buy both players at the end of the season for a total sum of €12 million. Muriel has been working with Sampdoria until June 30, 2019. During his loan period, he scored four times in 16 appearances before completing a permanent transfer at the end of the season. In his last season with the club, he had a career-best record of 11 league goals and five assists, which caused Sevilla to forfeit their club's record for signing him at the end of the season.
Sevilla's La Liga team Sevilla reported the signing of Muriel for a reported club-record fee of €20 million, as well as potential add-ons. He made his debut on September 19th in a 1–1 draw with Espanyol and scored his first goal for the club on September 17th, netting the winner in a 1–0 victory over Girona. Muriel found himself behind Wissam Ben Yedder and new club signings André Silva and Quincy Promes in the pecking order for Sevilla the following season after a disappointing debut season in which he only scored 9 goals in 46 appearances.
Muriel returned to Serie A on January 2nd, 2019, after joining Fiorentina on loan for the remainder of the season. In a victory over Maltese and Hibernians a week later, he scored a hat-trick on his debut in a win over Torino on January 14th. During a 3–3 draw with Sampdoria, he scored twice on his debut in league on January 20, January 20. During his loan stint, he scored six league goals, but was not able to sign long after the club went through a change in ownership.
Muriel returned to Serie A on June 21, 2019, after a fruitful loan period with Fiorentina, after committing to Atalanta in a permanent contract worth a reported €18 million.
International career
At the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup, where Colombia was the host country, Muriel represented Colombia at the U20 World Cup and featured for the country. Colombia defeated Korea Republic 1–0 on August 6, 2011, defeating France by twice on August 6th. He had previously scored twice against France before. Until Colombia was eliminated by Mexico in the quarter-finals, Muriel scored four goals for the tournament before being disqualified by Mexico.
Muriel was called up to the senior team by new boss José Pékerman in 2012 for the first time in 2012 and made his World Cup qualifier against Ecuador on June ten. He scored in a friendly against Guatemala on February 6, 2013 for his first goal of the year. He was one of seven players cut from Colombia's extended squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil in 2014. He was a member of Colombia's squad for the 2015 Copa América, but was disregarded for the Copa América Centenario the next year.
He was named in Colombia's preliminary 35-man squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia in May 2018. He appeared regularly in the Round of 16 where Colombia was eliminated after a penalty shoot-out loss to England.
Muriel was included in the 23-man Colombia squad for the 2019 Copa América in Brazil the following summer.
In a 3–2 victory over Peru in the third-place match of the 2021 Copa América on July 9, 2021, Muriel assisted Luis Diaz' match-winning goal in a 3–2 victory over Peru.
