Lucille Frances Lawless, (née Ryan; born 29 March 1968) is a New Zealand actress and singer.
In the television series Xena: Warrior Princess (1995–2001), she played the title character; and Lucretia in the television series Spartacus: Gods of the Arena (2011); and its sequel Spartacus: Vengeance (2012). Lawless appeared on the NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation (2012–2015), and on the WGN America supernatural series Salem (2015). Diane Lewis-Swanson was a regular participant.

Early life
Lucille Frances "Lucy" Ryan was born in Mount Albert's suburb of Helen Ryan (nee Haynes) and Mount Albert's mayor, Frank Ryan. She is the fifth of six siblings (four brothers and one sister). When filming in Ireland for the Discovery Channel in 2004, she told Ireland that her father's family roots in Quilty, County Clare.
She began acting in secondary school at age ten and began performing in musicals. She studied at Marist College, Auckland, and began learning in languages at Auckland University. She went on her "overseas journey" in Europe and Australia with her future husband, Garth Lawless, at 18. She took the 1989 Mrs New Zealand competition at 21 years old.
As an infant, lawless has stated that she suffered from bulimia as a child, but she was able to recover from the disease.
Personal life
While working with Garth Lawless in 1988, she became pregnant. They married in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, that year, but then returned to New Zealand, where Daisy's daughter was born. In 1995, the two married.
Robert G. "Rob" Tapert, Xena's executive producer, married John Lawless, the CEO of Pacific Renaissance Pictures, on March 28, 1998. They have two sons.
Career
In the New Zealand sketch-comedy film Funny Business, she appeared on television for 212 seasons as a cast member. At the William Davis Centre for Actors Study in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, then studied drama.
Lawless appeared in Hercules and the Amazon Women, a Pacific Renaissance Pictures made-for-television film that became the television pilot for Hercules: The Legendary Journeys in 1994. Lysia, a man-hating Amazon, appeared in that episode. In the first-season episode "As Shadow Falls," she continued to play Lyla.
In the first season of Hercules, lawless played Xena, a hero warrior woman. She appeared in the episode "The Warrior Princess" which aired in March 1995. R. J. Stewart, one of Pacific Renaissance Pictures' in-house writers, dramatized the teleplay from Robert G. "Rob" Tapert's commissioning of John Schulian to write. The character developed to be a fan favorite. Vanessa Angel was originally cast in the role, but she became sick and was unable to travel to New Zealand for shooting. Lawless' hair, previously an ash blonde, was dyed black to distinguish Xena and the similiar Lysia. She wore a much darker outfit as well. In two more episodes of Hercules' first season, she went from villainess to a good, heroic role.
The character was so popular that a spin-off series was created: Xena: The Warrior Princess debuted on September 4, 1995. Xena: Warrior Princess, like its parent show, was a huge success and had high ratings and cultural importance for six seasons. Lawless received a lot of attention, and she became a national celebrity in the series.
When taping a performance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in October 1996, Lawless suffered a fractured pelvis when the horse she was riding lost its footing in the studio parking lot. She made a complete recovery, but many episodes of the second season of Xena were rewritten to emphasize background characters in order to minimize the time Lawless was needed on set.
Xena's tumultuous romantic relationship with traveling companion Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor) culminated in Lawless becoming a lesbian icon, a position for which she has expressed pride. She has said that during the years she had been involved in the role, she had been undecided on the character of the marriage, but that after watching the series finale, she realized she was married, man." In Spartacus: The Gods of the Arena, her reputation was cemented after her "graphic lesbian sex scenes." She has appeared at gay pride festivals, such as the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

Lawless appeared in the Starz original film Spartacus: Blood and Sand. The show was based on Spartacus, the legendary gladiator, and the slave revolt he led, and was produced by long-time Xena producers Sam Raimi and "Rob" Tapert, her own husband. Lucretia, the wife of Lentulus Batiatus, was among the owner of a gladiator ludus and Lawless performed nude scenes for the first time. Lawless was named Best Supporting Actress in Spartacus: Blood and Sand in 2011 by Lucretia. Singing career
Betty Rizzo was in a production of Grease in 1997, but Lawless, who has experience in musical theatre, performed Betty Rizzo on Broadway. She continued to perform during Xena's run, as well as contributing dirge music of her own creation; this made it into the episode "The Way Not Taken" as the dirge "Burial," which she performed for the first time in the episode. "The Bitter Suite" and "Lyre, Lyre, Heart's on Fire," two musically oriented episodes, not only showcased her singing but also those of her castmates.
