Lorenzo de' Medici Life

Lorenzo de' Medici (January 1449--April 1492), an Italian statesman, de facto king of the Florentine Republic and Italy's most influential and enthusiastic promoter of Renaissance art.

Lorenzo is also known as Lorenzo the Magnificent (Lorenzo il Magnifico [lo'rtso il ma]) (i.fiko) by modern Florentines, he was a magnate, diplomat, philologist, and patron of scholars, writers, and poets.

He is best known for his sponsorship of artists such as Botticelli and Michelangelo.

He maintained the balance of power within the Italic League, an alliance of states that unified political conditions on the Italian peninsula for decades, and his life coincided with the Italian Renaissance's maturing period and Florence's Golden Age.

With his death, the Peace of Lodi of 1454 that he helped keep among the various Italian states fell out.

In Florence's Medici Chapel, he is buried.
