Lira Career

Life and career

Lerato Moipone Molapo was born in Daveyton, Johannesburg, on March 14th, 1979, to Buyi Radebe (mother) and Khanyapa Molapo Sr. (father).

The harsh realities of South Africa's former racial and socioeconomic apartheid influenced Lira's world. She grew up listening to Miriam Makeba, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, and Nina Simone, who would later inspire her own songwriting. She began performing live at the age of 16, performing both cover versions and self-penned songs.

Lira studied Accounting and turned to recording time at a local studio as an undergraduate student, resulting in her first demo at the age of 18. Lira continued in accounting after graduation for two years. With aspirations to be a performer, she resigned and created a five-year plan for her music career.

She was discovered by singer/producer Arthur Mafokate, who signed her to his record label, 999 Music, in 2000, and she assisted with the debut of her debut album, All My Love (2003). The album has received accolades at the Metro FM Awards, SAMAs, and Channel O Reel Music Awards. Beyoncé's single "Dangerously in Love" dropped off the charts this year. In the year after, she, keyboardist Victor Mngomezulu, bassist Tshepo Sekele, and producer Robin Kohle were all thrown out of the charts. She was then signed to Sony Music Africa and released her first major label album Feel Good the following year.

She debuted her first major label album on Sony Music Africa in 2006. Feel Good is making a name for itself on the South African music scene. The title track became the most popular local song on radio shortly after being released. The album received her accolades at the South African Music Awards (SAMA), as well as the first music video from a South African artist to be featured on VH-1. The album was a triple-Platinum by the Recording Industry of South Africa, while the single was named as the most downloaded song by the SAMA in 2008. The album was first released in Italy in July 2007, where its title track attracted a lot of airplay.

Soul in Mind was released in 2008 by the singer. The following summer, it went on to record most awards for a single artist in a single year (4). The album was awarded triple platinum by the Royal Society of Britain. "Woman of the Year" was chosen by Glamour Magazine South Africa later this year.

In 2009, she began compiling the ingredients of her live concert DVD. The film, which was shot before a live audience at the Carnival City Casino, attracted ten RED digital video cameras – the first in the United States – and was released the same year. Nine million South Africans tuned in to the concert's telecast, and then the DVD reached three-time platinum when it was released in November 2010. In 2011, a Blu-ray version was released, making it the first Blu-ray to be released on the continent. At the 2010 SAMA's, the DVD was named "Best Global Chart DVD." It soon became the country's fastest and highest-selling music video disc in the Sony Music catalog, surpassing Celine Dion's No. 69. Live in Las Vegas – A New Day; A new Day. The DVD's soundtrack, which was released in October 2009, was given the Platinum award.

Alicia Keys, Shakira, K'Naan, and John Legend were among the group of performers at the FIFA World Cup Kick-Off Concert, which featured a version of "Pata Pata," a hit song first released by the late Miriam Makeba in the summer of 2010. She was chosen to attend the 92nd birthday of former South African President Nelson Mandela later this summer. Mandela's appearance of the famous Labi Siffre anti-apartheid song and Mandela's favourite "Some Inside) So Strong" with the Soweto Spiritual Singers was one of her career's most popular performances.

In the Antonio Falduto-directed drama The Italian Consult (Il Console Italiano), she made her cinematic debut as the support lead. The film premiered at the Taormina Film Festival in Italy in June 2011, where Lira became only the second African vocalist to grace the Teatro Del Greco stage after Miriam Makeba. Lira de Sio, as well as Edwin Angless and Anna Galiena, appear in the film, which is centered on girl trafficking in Europe.

Return to Love, her fourth studio album, was announced in January 2011. The 11-track set included songs about hope, love, and interconnectedness. "Call Me," "Get Into Action," "Mali," "Get into Action," "Phakade," and "Be My Friend" were among the songs that featured sounds of funk, ragga, urban, soul, and traditional African. The album did well as it went double-platinum, and hit song Phakade debuted triple-platinum. The album was followed by a tour called CAPTURED IN TOUR, where she toured around five cities in South Africa. The show was recorded and later released in DVD form, which also sold well.

Essence magazine named her one of the "Five Unique Artists to Change Music in 2012" in December 2011.

"We're a young democracy, and we're used to an image of Africa as a place that needs outside assistance," she said in May 2012 in L'Uomo Vogue's "Re-Branding Africa" issue, which included General Ban Ki-Moon on the front. We should instead take stock of our present, become autonomous, discover our identity, and independence."

"Feel Good" ("Phakade") and "Rise Again" were among her debut American albums released by Michelle's debut American album, Rise Again (Shanachie Records), a 14-track LP containing tracks from her African catalog, including "Feel Good," "Phakade" and "Rise Again."

Lira was the special guest act for American Neo-Soul actor Jill Scott in a one-night-only concert in Johannesburg on December 13, 2014.

Born Free, she released her sixth studio album, "Rhythm of Your Heart," "Listen," "Let There Be Light," and "Be About It" exclusive to iTunes Africa on March 25, 2016. In August 2016, the artist announced that the album and the single "Sekunjalo" were gold together with the album, as well as the single "Let There Be Light" went platinum. Lira didn't submit the album for review at Metro FM and SAMA Awards, so the album didn't win any awards.
