Linda Lee Cadwell (née Emery, 1935) is an American educator best known as the widow of martial arts master and actor Bruce Lee.
Life and career
She was born in Everett, Washington, and the niece of Vivian R. (née Hester) (1911-1998) and Everett Emery. Her family was Baptist and of Swedish, Irish, and English descent.
She met Bruce Lee at Garfield High School, where Bruce came to give a kung fu demonstration; at the time, she was attending the University of Washington. When she first enrolled the University of Washington, she became one of his kung fu students, studying to become a teacher.
They married on August 17, 1964. Linda was a few credits shy of graduating. Brandon Lee and Shannon Lee were the couple's two children. At the time, Bruce Lee had opened his own kung fu school and was teaching Jun Fan Gung Fu, Lee's updated version of Wing Chun, which would later serve as the basis for Jeet Kune Do. He died as a result of an allergic reaction to an analgesic on July 20, 1973.
Linda married Tom Bleecker in 1988, but they divorced in 1990. Bruce Cadwell, a stockbroker, married her in 1991 and spent their lives in Rancho Mirage, California.
When filming The Crow on March 31, 1993, she was accidentally shot to death with a prop gun.
Cadwell has continued to support Bruce Lee's martial art, Jeet Kune Do. Shannon (who now chairs the Lee family estate) and her brother Shannon (who now works on philosophy) founded the Bruce Lee Foundation, a non-profit group dedicated to teaching Bruce Lee's philosophy and writing on philosophy.
Cadwell wrote Bruce Lee: The Man Only I Knew, a 1975 feature film on which the Bruce Lee Story was based (ISBN 0-446-89407-9). In the film version, actress Lauren Holly portrayed her. She wrote The Bruce Lee Story in 1989 (ISBN 0-89750121-7).
