Early life

La Havas was born and raised in London, England, to a Greek father and Jamaican mother. Since her parents divorced, she was raised in Tooting and Streatham and spent the majority of her time with her grandparents. La Havas began performing at seven and cites her parents' varied musical tastes as having the most influence on her music. Her father, a gifted multi-instrumentalist, taught her the basics of guitar and piano. La Havas performed her first song at the age of 11, but she didn't learn to play the guitar until she was 18 years old. She sang in her school choir. She studied her A-levels at Norbury Manor Business and Enterprise College for Girls in Thornton Heath. Before she decided to leave college to pursue a career in music full-time, she had intended to enroll in an art foundation course.

Lianne Barnes is the author of her birth name, and her stage name is a retort of her Greek father Henry Vlahavas' surname.
