Lex Luger Career

Career

Luger played percussion for his church and drummed in church bands as an youth. His first exposure to music was playing drums at a local church where he learned about beats, measures, BPMS, and bars using a DJ system in which he took instrumentals and mixed them with acapellas. He went back to making music on PlayStation Music Generator 3, where he started working with turntables. Luger began to try his hand at producing high-quality hip hop beats when Luger eventually saved enough money for an Akai MPC 2500 and formed the VABP (Virginia Boyz Productionz) production crew with his high school classmates. Luger received an unlicensed copy of FL Studio after buying an MPC 2000 from his uncle, his buddy, and now collaborator Urboyblack. He has also included music production workstations like Maschine and Pro Tools.

Luger's first days of learning with Fruity Loops and working every day after school, but it wasn't enough to jump start Luger's production career. When he realized that he could produce song length instrumentals at a quick rate, he dropped out of King's Fork High School in the tenth grade to further develop his music production skills. Luger discovered that he could knock out at least 10 beats a day after honing his craft for hours. He started being aware of independent music artists who were gaining recognition via MySpace and began posting music on his website. He began cold-emailing his beats to various rappers and streaming instrumentals on his Myspace page in the hopes of increasing hip hop exposure. In 2009, a then unknown rapper by the name of Waka Flocka Flame began e-mailing him back. When Luger began sending Waka beats every few days, the two friends formed a friendship on MySpace.

When Luger demanded a particularly brutal beat he wanted to rap about, he expressed disappointment in his production style. Luger added 40 beats to Waka's 2009, 'Salute Me or Shoot Me 2' mixtape. Waka later requested more Luger from whom he responded with hundreds more, before Waka Flocka Flame flew him out to Atlanta to work with him. Luger, who worked in Atlanta with Waka Flocka Flame, laid down a large part of the production's debut album, spending months in a basement with no internet access. Luger, who has no idea what the future holds for his work, considered taking a second job stacking boxes in a warehouse to supplement his production. When his song O Lets Do It (British) became a hit, Waka became well-known and was eventually signed to Bricksquad.

"Hard in the Paint," by Waka Flocka Flames, was Luger's first radio wave and became a hit by May 2010. Luger was in Atlanta at the time when the song first appeared on the radio. Luger received a phone call from Chicago rapper and record producer Kanye West, but he didn't know who he was talking to for two hours while in Atlanta. Luger was determined who it was, and he was flying to New York City to work with him. He produced eight backing beats for West's use, including the beat that became the single H•A•M and the bonus cut "See Me Now" for West's 2010 album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Luger was also contacted by Spiff TV, who told him that he should get the instrumental track of "Hard In The Paint" which eventually led to Luger's friendship with Rick Ross as Ross wanted to do a remix for the song. Luger was compelled to form a B.M.F. as a result of Rick Ross's return to him. (Blowin' Money Fast) and MC Hammer for Ross' 2010 album Teflon Don (Blowin's Money Fast) and MC Hammer. Luger gained a career boost after being employed with Ross on Twitter when he noticed an increase in followers. Luger had landed production work from rappers Ace Hood, Soulja Boy, Chingy, Sean Garrett, and Fabolous by June 2010.

Luger's sound evolved from the mixtape circuit to the mainstream hip hop scene, earning the attention of a multitude of rappers who requested his jackhammer drum and spooky trap synth production style. He produced tracks for a number of well-known rappers, including Rick Ross' Teflon Don, Waka Flocka Flame's Flockaveli, Slim Thug's Thug Show, and Watch the Throne, including Kanye West and Jay-Z's Watch the Throne. He went on to work with a number of other famous rappers, including Wiz Khalifa, Big Sean, Wale, Fabolous, Juicy J, Soulja Boy, Snoop Dogg, and 2 Chainz, as well as producing songs for a number of street famous rappers, including Fat Trel, Lil Scrappy, and OJ Da Juiceman. Luger started working with Juicy J in late 2010, citing him as a musical authority as well as a music industry advisor, following his success with Waka Flocka Flame and Rick Ross. Juicy J joined Luger under his wings, and the two eventually collaborated on two mixtapes with Juicy J leveraging Luger's career boost as well as the ability to create buzz to help Luger's name in the hip hop industry. Luger went on to produce more than 200 songs during a string of street and underground hip hop mixtapes between 2010 and 2011.

Luger was first associated with Brick Squad producer Southside. In 2010, the two of them formed 808 Mafia, which was later sold to the company the following year. Luger received the award for Producer of the Year at the 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards for the first year.

Luger, a Canadian DJ/producer A-Trak, joined forces with Low Pros in February 2014 with the intention of launching a joint project. Brick Squad associates PeeWee Longway and Young Thug performed "Jack Tripper," a drug-addled trap song starring Brick Squad affiliates, who had just increased in fame at the time due to the popularity of his 2013 singles "Stoner" and "Danny Glover."

Luger first performed as a live act in late 2014. In September 2014, he signed with agent Wilcox Weaver of Oklahoma City and Los Angeles based Warpath Group, which is headquartered in Los Angeles, to handle worldwide tour reservations. He signed to EXYT Agency in January 2015 for European and Asian tour bookings. Luger and his DJ, Kino Beats, have performed all around the world. Since selling out a complete European tour in May 2015, he has had a great success with this venture, selling thousands of tickets around the world.

Luger headlined Virginia's fifth annual EpicFest Hip Hop Festival in Richmond, Virginia, on June 27, 2015.

Luger's first full length instrumental project was unveiled on March 22, 2016. Besides his DJ and collaborator KinoBeats, as well as his V.A.B.P., the project features his V.A.B. HighDefRazah, UrBoyBlack, and Trama are all collaborators from his early days in production.

In an interview with DJ Smallz Eyes in September 2018, Luger discussed his seven-year battle with heroin use. He was hospitalized four times in one case being almost fatal, despite claiming that he was taking the prescription drug Xanax on a daily basis and was also addicted to ecstasy and marijuana. He said that he could not tell the world from reality for four days. Luger has finally decided to get clean with help from rehab. Since 2017, he has been sober from all drugs except alcohol.
