Levon Helm Life

Mark Lavon "Levon" Helm (May 26, 1940 – April 19, 2012) was an American musician and actor who rose to fame as the drummer and one of The Band's vocalists.

Helm was known for his deeply felt, country-accented voice, multi-instrumental skill, and unique drumming style on several of the band's albums, such as "The Weight," "Up on Cripple Creek," and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." Helm also performed as a Tennessee firearms specialist in Shooter, appearing in Coal Miner's Daughter as Loretta Lynn's father, as Chuck Yeager's uncle and colleague Captain Jack Ridley in The Right Stuff, and as a Tennessee firearms specialist in Shooter. Helm was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1998, which caused him to lose his singing voice.

His cancer eventually went into remission, and he gradually recovered the use of his voice after treatment.

In February 2008, his 2007 comeback album Dirt Farmer received the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album, and Rolling Stone magazine ranked him No. 103. In its list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time, 91 is ranked 91 out of 91.

Electric Dirt Farmer's 2009 sequel to Dirt Farmer, received the first Grammy Award for Best Americana Album, a category that was not established in 2010.

Ramble at the Ryman won the Grammy in 2011 in the same segment.

His wife and daughter revealed on Helm's website on April 17, 2012, "in the last stages of his cancer battle," and thanked supporters who requested prayers.

Helm died at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City two days later.

Personal life

Helm met singer-songwriter Libby Titus in April 1969, just as the Band was releasing its second album. They began a long relationship that culminated in daughter Amy Helm (born December 3, 1970). Amy formed the group Ollabelle and appeared with her father's band at the Midnight Rambles and other concerts.

When Helm was still involved with Titus in 1975, he met Sandra Doddd. Helm and Dodd were married on September 7, 1981. They had no children together.
