Lennard Pearce (9 February 1915 – December 15, 1984) was an English actor who worked mainly in theatre but also appeared in British television programs.
From September 1981 to his death in December 1984, he appeared in the last years of his life as Grandad in the sitcom Only Fools and Horses.
Career
Pearce was born in Paddington and trained as an actor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He went on a performance tour in Germany as a young actor in the 1930s. Senior members of the Nazi Party attended one theatrical performance; at the end of the program, party leaders gathered to applaud the cast; and Pearce shaken hands with Adolf Hitler. Pearce later told his Only Fools and Horses co-star Nicholas Lyndhurst that he regretted not having the opportunity to kill Hitler.
Pearce served for the Entertainments National Service Association during World War II (ENSA). In the first West End production of My Fair Lady, he understudied for Stanley Holloway as Alfred P. Doolittle in the early 1960s. He appeared in many productions at the National Theatre, including Much Ado About Nothing and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, since 1965. On stage, he appeared with Laurence Olivier and Anthony Hopkins. Pearce appeared in Richard Brinsley Sheridan's The Rivals in 1966, but the two men did not meet again until 15 years later.
Pearce performed Owl in a London theatre production of Winnie the Pooh, and Mr Witherspoon appeared in Arsenic and Old Lace at the Westminster Theatre two years later. He was also a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Pearce appeared in the BBC sitcom Only Fools and Horses series from 1981 to 1983, the position with which he is most closely associated. Dixon of Dock Green (1965), Dr. Finlay's Casebook (1967), Sykes (1972) and Coronation Street were among his many publications, as well as The Wednesday Play ("Cathy Come Home" 1966). Pearce appeared in the Crown Court broadcast in February 1984.
Pearce appeared in "The Balance of Power," a Minder episode that was broadcast on Halloween in 1984, as well as playing Mr Coles in three episodes of Shroud in March 1984. Buster Merryfield, the man who replaced Pearce as the senior member of the Trotter family, appeared in two episodes of the same series.
