Leigh Hobbs Career

Life and career

Leigh Hobbs was born in Williamstown, Australia, and grew up in Bairnsdale, Australia. After graduating from Caulfield Institute of Technology (now Monash University) in 1973, he was working as an artist at Luna Park, an amusement park located adjacent to Sydney's Harbour Bridge. Larry and Lizzy Luna, two large three-dimensional animals who now reside at Sydney's Powerhouse Museum, were designed for the antique carousel's color scheme. Hobbs supported his artistic career by teaching in secondary school art education from 1978 to 2002.

At the Rex Irwin Gallery in Sydney, Hobbs held a one-man show of caricature sculptures in 1980. He was a freelance contributing cartoonist for The Age newspaper in Melbourne, Victoria, between 1985 and 2010. A number of major Hobbs profiles have been published since 1999. Leigh Hobbs made a line of glazed ceramic tea pots reminiscent of Melbourne's Flinders Street Station in 1983. These are among a number of galleries' collections, including the National Gallery of Victoria. Hobbs created the colour scheme for Melbourne's Luna Park in St. Kilda in 1999. Old Tom, a French/Australian co-produced animated cartoon TV series, was released in Australia between 1998 and 2002, and over 50 episodes were broadcast in Australia on ABC TV. Mr Chicken Goes To Paris was adapted by Hobbs' book Mr Chicken Goes to Paris for the stage in 2013, and the book is a popular model in Paris's Musée du Louvre bookshop.

Leigh Hobbs' children's books are often described as being on a variety of fronts, and they could be described as delicately submissive. For example, Hobbs' most popular design, Old Tom, is a grotesque one-eyed cat, but the word cat is never used in the books. Angela Throgmorton, Old Tom's 'owner,' believes of Old Tom as her'son,' and the stories revolve around her attempts to socialize this creature, who is in effect like a seven-year-old boy attempting to escape from a mother's constraints. Hobbs has been nominated for many of the top children's choice awards in Australia, and his books have been shortlisted for the Prime Minister's Literary Awards in 2010. Allen & Unwin have published his works in Australia.

Leigh Hobbs' artwork, paintings, drawings, prints, illustrations, and ceramics can be found in a number of private collections, public art galleries, and museums, including the National Gallery of Victoria and the State Libraries of Victoria and Western Australia. In Australia's National Portrait Gallery, a 1993 photo-portrait by Francis Reiss of Hobbs at work is on display.

Leigh Hobbs was the Australian Children's Laureate for 2016 and 2017.

Leigh and his character Mr Chicken were featured on a 'Australian Legends of Children's Literature' postage stamp in 2019.
