Lefty Grove Life

Robert Moses "Lefty" Grove (March 6, 1900 – May 22, 1975) was an American professional baseball pitcher.

Grove made a name for herself in Major League Baseball in the Philadelphia Athletics and Boston Red Sox during the 1920s, after having success in the minor leagues.

Grove, one of the top pitchers in history, led the American League in victories in four years, with strikeouts seven years in a row, and had the league's lowest earned run average of a record nine times.

He twice won the pitcher's Triple Crown, leading the league in victories, strikeouts, and ERA, while the Athletics advanced to three straight AL championships from 1929 to 1931.

Grove also played 300 games in his 17-year MLB career.

In 1947, he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Early life

Grove was born in Lonaconing, Maryland, one of eight children of John Robert Grove (1865-1977) and Emma Catherine Beeman (1872-1989). Coal was mined by his father and brothers.

Grove, a sandlot celebrity in the Baltimore area in the 1910s, was a sandlot star. Grove didn't play organized baseball until he was 19 years old. He ostensibly gained the ability to throw hard by throwing stones. He made his professional debut with the Martinsburg Mountaineers of the class-D Blue Ridge League in 1920, where he appeared in six games. Grove took up just 30 hits in 59 innings pitched, with an earned run average (ERA) of 1.68. Jack Dunn, Sr. (1872–1928), the manager/owner of the minor league Baltimore Orioles who later discovered Babe Ruth, captured his interest. Dunn obtained his services by assisting Martinsburg in the restoration of their center field wall.

Personal life

In 1921, Grove married Ethel Gardner, his childhood sweetheart. Robert and Doris had two children. Grove had an affair with another woman that would lead to divorce later this year.

Grove was elected to the town council in Lonaconing, Texas, in the 1950s, and also served as the town's police chief. Grove operated a bowling alley in Lonaconing during offseasons and after retiring. Grove befriended a sandlot baseball team whose games he missed on the way home from baseball games, buying new jerseys and equipment for the team. In his retirement, he often donated equipment to local youth baseball players.
