Lawrence Olajuwon Timmons (born May 14, 1986) is a former American football linebacker.

In the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He'll win Super Bowl XLIII with the Steelers over the Arizona Cardinals later this year.

He played college football at Florida State University.

Early years

Timmons attended Wilson High School in Florence, South Carolina, where he played football and ran track. In football, he was a tight end on offense and a linebacker on defense. Justin Durant was his mentor from the start of his junior season. Timmons played over 150 tackles and two sacks during his senior year, as well as five touchdowns as a tight end, earning him all-state first-team honors. He was also named Defensive Player of the Year and was given the Super Prep Elite 50 Award. He was also selected to play in the 2003 East-West Shrine Game.

Timmons participated in the long jump, achieving a career-best leap of 6.55 meters at the 2003 SCHSL State Championships, where he finished sixth in the finals. He was also a member of the 4 100 m and 4 200 m relay teams and was timed in 4.6 seconds in the 40-yard dash.

Timmons, who was classified as a four-star recruit by Rivals.com, was ranked as the No. 1 in the nation's top recruits. Lawrence Timmons Career

College career

Timmons appeared in all 12 games, including the Seminoles' victory over West Virginia, but only limited minutes on special teams and as a backup linebacker. He had 12 tackles, 11 of which were unassisted, ranking second in the Seminoles after Jae Thaxton. Against Alabama–Birmingham, a season-high three tackles were recorded.

Timmons was ranked second on the Seminoles' depth chart as a sophomore, behind Ernie Sims and Ernie Sims. He appeared in all 13 games, both as a linebacker and on special teams, as well as the defensive end in some third-and-long formations. Timmons finished the year with 35 tackles (17 solo), ranking him third on the team behind Buster Davis and Sam McGrew, as well as three quarterback sacks, which were also third-best among all Seminoles behind Kamerion Wimbley and Marcello Church. In the ACC Championship Game against Virginia Tech, he had eight tackles, six solo, two quarterback sacks, and two QB hurries.

Timmons took over as the starter at the strongside linebacker after Sims decided not to return to school for the remainder of his senior season. He had a great season with 79 tackles and five sacks, and was honoured with a third-team and all-Atlantic Coast Conference first-team honors. He had 126 tackles and eight sacks in his college career.

Professional career

Timmons was the first player drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2007 NFL Draft, ranked 15th overall, and was the first player drafted under head coach Mike Tomlin. He started his rookie season as the backup right outside linebacker to James Harrison. In the Steelers' season opener against the Cleveland Browns, he made one tackle, making one tackle for the Steelers. During a 26-3 victory over the Buffalo Bills the following week, he made his season-high two solo tackles. He was used only as a rookie and on special teams, but he appeared in all 16 regular-season games. He made 13 tackles in his rookie season.

He was promoted to right inside linebacker in the next season, leading up veteran Larry Foote on a Steelers defensive linebacking corps with veteran depth and experience that included himself, Foote, Harrison, Lamarr Woodley, and James Farrior. In a 38–17 victory over the Houston Texans, he made four solo tackles in the season opener. Timmons fired Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco for his first career suspension after the Steelers defeated them 23-20 in overtime on Monday Night Football on Monday night, on September 29, 2008. He had his best game of the season so far, averaging ten total tackles and receiving a season-high two sacks during the Steelers' 38–10 victory. Timmons made his first appearance appearance against the Washington Redskins on Monday Night Football and finished the game with four combined tackles.

During the Steelers' 33–10 win, Matt Cassel intercepted the Patriots for his first career interception. He appeared in his first playoff game for the Steelers when they defeated the San Diego Chargers 35–24 in the wildcard round on January 11, 2009. He finished the game with six combined tackles, three of whom were solo. In Super Bowl XLIII, the Steelers defeated the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship and advanced to face the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII. Timmons had five tackles in his first Super Bowl, helping his team win by 27–23. While playing in all 16 regular-season games, he had 65 tackles, five sacks, and an interceptor.

Following Larry Foote's release, Timmons assumed as the starter and increased playing time, he took over as the starter for the 2009 season. Timmons was listed as the Steelers' starting right inside linebacker to start the season, but he was forced to miss the season opener against the Tennessee Titans. Following a 14-17 loss to the Chicago Bears, he returned the following week, with three solo tackles and two pass deflections. During a loss to the Bengals that sparked the season, he made his first appearance of the season and ended the game with three combined tackles and a pass deflection. Timmons had five tackles and sparked two fumbles as the Steelers defeated the Cleveland Browns 27–14 in Week 5. He had 78 combined tackles, 7 arrests, 4 pass deflections, and 3 forced fumbles in 13 starts and 14 games during the 2009 season.

Timmons started the season with a 15–9 victory over the Atlanta Falcons, with 11 tackles. During a victory over the Tennessee Titans last week, he recorded a career-high 15 combined tackles (12 solo) and a forced fumble.

He had a career with the Steelers in 2010 and was named the highest-rated inside linebacker by Pro Football Focus on the season. With 135 tackles, 9 pass deflections, 2 forced fumbles, and 2 interceptions, he led the team with three sacks, 9 pass deflections, 2 forced fumbles, and 2 interceptions. The Steelers debuted No. 1 on the charts. Only 63.2 yards per game allowed in the league's 1 run defense, with only 1 running defense allowing only 63.2 yards per game. Timmons appeared in all of the 16 regular season games while others were playing in all of them.

Timmons and the Steelers appeared in Super Bowl XLV against the Green Bay Packers at the end of the 2010 season. In the 31-26 loss, he was a starter with three total tackles.

Timmons was given a five-year, $47.79 million contract extension on August 23, 2011 that included $11 million as a result and a $10 million signing bonus. His rookie contract came to an end at the end of the 2010 season as he was a free agent; however, the Steelers signed him to a new one after the NFL lockout was settled. In the Steelers' season opener against the Ravens, he had a season-high 12 tackles. Timmons' numbers dropped from the previous season as a result of his transfer from inside linebacker to outside linebacker, filling in for injured James Harrison. In a 19–31 loss to the Denver Broncos, he started the season by making five solo tackles. Matt Hasselbeck, the Tennessee Titans' quarterback, made six total tackles and intercepted the Titans quarterback for his first pick of the season during a Week 6 match against the Tennessee Titans. Timmons played ten total tackles and intercepted Brandon Weeden on November 25, 2016 for his first appearance. The Steelers went on to lose 14-20 to the Browns. In a loss to the San Diego Chargers in Week 14, he made a season-high 11 solo tackles. He had a career-high 3 interceptions in his sixth NFL season, with 106 tackles, 6.0 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and a career-high 3 interceptions. This was his first season as a head coach of all 16 regular season games.

Timmons recorded a season-high 17 tackles (12 solo) during a 17-13 victory over the Baltimore Ravens on October 20, 2013.

Timmons was the team's leader in 2013 with 126 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 2 interceptions, and a forced fumble. This was his second time in the team's last three years he was in charge of tackles. For the second year in a row, he played in all 16 games.

During a 6–26 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on September 11, 2014, he made 12 total tackles. Timmons was assisting in the Houston Texans' season-high 11 solo tackles and an assisted tackle on October 20. He recorded a season-high 13 total tackles during a Week 10 loss to the Jets. Timmons posted his season-high of 13 combined tackles during a 20–12 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on December 21, 2014.

He had another stellar season and was lauded for it by being named to his first Pro Bowl appearance on December 23, 2014. Lawrence Timmons was named Second-team All-Pro for the first time in his career on January 2, 2015. He ended the 2014 season with 132 total tackles, 87 solo tackles, and two sacks. For the third year in a row, he appeared in all 16 games for the third time.

Timmons had a season-high 11 tackles and fired Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco for his first of the season on Week 4 of the 2015 season. In a 25–13 loss over the Arizona Cardinals on October 18, 2015, he had six combined tackles and intercepted Carson Palmer. In a 28-12 victory over the Cleveland Browns, he had ten combined tackles and a season-high 1.5 sacks. Timmons finished the season with 119 combined tackles, 77 solo tackle, one interception, and one forced fumble.

The Pittsburgh Steelers finished the season 10–6 and gained a playoff spot. Timmons had four combined tackles against the Cincinnati Bengals in an 18–16 AFC Wildcard win on January 9, 2016. In a 23-16 divisional loss to the Denver Broncos, the eventual Super Bowl champions, on January 17, 2016, he made six combined tackles.

During the game, the Steelers lost to the New England Patriots and Timmons, who scored a season-high 11 solo tackles. In a 24–9 victory over the Cleveland Browns, Timmons recorded eight combined tackles and made his first sack of the season. He made seven combined tackles and intercepted Eli Manning, the quarterback of the New York Giants, in Week 13 and recapped it 58 yards. He had 114 combined tackles, 2.5 sacks, 5 pass deflections, two interceptions, two interceptions, and a forced fumble in 16 games and 16 starts on the season.

Timmons defeated the Miami Dolphins by 30–12 on January 8, 2017, with team-leading 14 combined tackles and fired quarterback Matt Moore twice.

Timmons signed a two-year, $12 million contract with the Miami Dolphins on March 10, 2017.

Timmons was suspended indefinitely by the Dolphins on September 19, 2017, after he went missing during the team's Week 2 match against the Los Angeles Chargers. Timmons was discovered missing from the team's hotel in Los Angeles, and the Dolphins reported a missing person report. Timmons was later discovered at the Los Angeles International Airport, but he was on the plane to visit his daughter, who lives in Pennsylvania. Timmons was recalled by the team on September 26, 2017.

Timmons was released by the Dolphins on March 13, 2018.
