Lawrence Makoare Career

Career

Makoare was a road construction builder who devolved into teaching after he accompanied a girlfriend to a drama class and was picked out by the teacher to perform due to his height. He started off his career as a stuntman. Makoare is best known for his appearances in the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film trilogies. He portrayed Uruk-hai chief Lurtz in The Fellowship of the Ring, as well as Gothmog, the Orc commander at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. He portrayed Orc commander Bolg, son of Azog, in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Makoare was unable to attend the Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies pick-ups shoot, in which Bolg is depicted by John Tui instead.

Makoare is also known among Xena: Warrior Princess followers: "The Quill Is Mightier" and "Mecanus" (a minion of Aphrodite): in episode "Fins, Femmes and Gems," a barbarian leader appears in episode "The Quill Is Mightier"; and "Mena, Femmes and Gems": a new figure. In the James Bond film Die Another Day, he portrayed Mr. Kil in 2002. Toa Fraser, the director of The Dead Lands, was not keen on using Makoare as the warrior, but the way he managed it was enough to win him over, despite a few directing hints.
