SIR CLIVE WOODWARD: Here's what England must do next after their best win in five years

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 10, 2024
SIR CLIVE WOODWARD: England's victory over Ireland at Twickenham was a major step in Steve Borthwick's and the team's progress. They were playing with purpose and passion. It's much simpler to be brutal on your team on the back of a win, and even more so if you've played so well. Borthwick will have to do this week if Ireland loses to France in Lyon, and that will mean little if Ireland loses to France.

After successful trials, rugby stars are expected to wear microphones during Premiership matches in the new year to bring viewers closer to the action

www.dailymail.co.uk, December 18, 2023
To bring viewers closer to the action, the Gallagher Premiership and its major league broadcaster TNT Sports want to include player microphone recordings in 2024. While playing is already common in other sports such as cricket, players or participants are being "micked up," rugby's plans are being implemented more often. It's part of the English domestic game's attempt to involve its fan base and television audience in a new way and make it more available to viewers at home.

SIR CLIVE WOODWARD: England's titans will battle fire with a fire in the midst of a pivotal World Cup semi-final appearance... and avenge 2019 Boks mauling

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 20, 2023
SIR CLIVE WOODWARD - WORLD CUP WINNING COACH: One of my favorite quotes is: "Great teams are made of great people." I've always thought the best players thrived under pressure in my coaching career. I would be putting the most pressure on the team if I were in Steve Borthwick's shoes as England head coach tonight. There will be no major Churchillian address made. I would tell this England squad that if every individual does their jobs properly, we will beat South Africa and guarantee a spot in the World Cup final. For every player and staff member of the Stade de France, there will be a lot of pressure. You do not want to be the one who lets the team down. Every person must win their one-on-one match. England are still strong underdogs, but if they do that, there is every chance of an upset. You are either the chaser or the one being chased in international rugby. This is what makes this game so interesting. The Englanders are usually the ones being chased. Everyone wants to beat England. If we like it or not as a nation, it is not going to change, so we may as well embrace it.

Kristian Kodra (inset), 25, was jailed for two years for running the unlawful operation that sold cocaine and prostitutes. In the six months before police searched the Georgian townhouse (right) in Holborn, central London, in July 2019, his gang earned at least £400,000. Officers discovered he had paid £10,550 to the owners, including £3,000 to Kodra, after being left with his wife Alice), a married father of three children. The 2003 Rugby World Cup winner was not arrested, but it was never determined what he paid for or whether he was alone during his visits. During the six-week trial at Wood Green Crown Court, north London, in March 2020, the BT Sport pundit did not appear or give evidence. However, the jury was told by investigators that his name and suspected spending had been revealed to him.

Wasps are now more, and English rugby is at a low point

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 18, 2023
COMMENT: The shock is seismic. The landscape of English rugby has been drastically changed at a stroke. Wasps are no longer available. Gone. The sport's marquee name has been misspelled. And so much in this season of turbulence and upheaval, it's difficult to comprehend. As the struggling but beloved club went into administration last fall under a mountain of debt, there were soon encouraging signs of a forthcoming revival. Saviours have appeared, or at least it seemed. However, those who wanted to resuscitate Wasps were unable to find a way to do so. They've been looking for a solution for months and months, but the numbers don't add up.

Lawrence Dallaglio has been given time to settle £700K in tax debt as he prepares for bankruptcy

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 9, 2023
Lawrence Dallaglio (pictured) from England rugby union has been given time by a judge to settle a tax bill owing to a £700,000. After HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) officials lodged a bankruptcy request, Judge Sebastian Prentis dismissed Dallaglio's appeal at an Insolvency and Companies Court hearing in London. An HMRC representative told Dallaglio, 50, that he is attempting to raise funds by selling a house. According to the court, a judge will reconsider the case in about three months. Dallaglio, a member of England's World Cup 2003, was unable to attend the hearing.

Lawrence Dallaglio, the former England rugby legend, 'is facing bankruptcy'

www.dailymail.co.uk, November 24, 2022
HMRC filed a lawsuit against World Cup-winning hero Lawrence Dallaglio, 50, at the High Court in central London on Tuesday. On Thursday, he said there was "nothing to worry about" outside his £3.5 million home in Richmond, South West London. He told the Sun he was 'aware' of the allegation, adding: 'It's all OK.' There is nothing to be concerned about. 'I've got someone dealing with it.' Individual cases are not included in HMRC's discussion. Dallaglio was one of the England team that triumphed over Australia in the 2003 Rugby World Cup final, which saw Jonny Wilkinson clinch victory with a drop goal in extra time. He told the Financial Times how he made his 'first million' when he retired in 2008, adding: "I think one has a right to make sure the taxman does not get everything." "If you wanted to make money, you wouldn't play rugby," he said. It has never been about money for me. I had a charity year in 2003, which raised more than £1 million for charities. Professional rugby players make more than £60,000 a year. If you win the World Cup, you'll get the same amount back.'

IAN HERBERT: Wasps, the city's 'parasite' Premiership rugby club, has no sympathy for his adopted city

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 13, 2022
To those looking for sympathy about Wasps' financial demise, we wish you luck. Wasps is the Premiership rugby team, who has been playing in the city for eight years. Even the most moderate and reflective of locals, the club was a bastion of rugby union, proving the fact that it was not welcome in the city where it was born.

Heineken, the Wasps beer partner, pulled lager from the stadium last weekend due to fears that they would go unpaid

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 11, 2022
Exclusive BY MATT HUGHES: Wasps' official beer partner Heineken withdrew lager from the Coventry Building Society Stadium before last weekend's Premiership home loss to Northampton due to fears that they would not be compensated for their product. Many of Wasps' suppliers have been told they are unlikely to be paid this month because the club is overdrafting limit and the team will go into administration next Monday. Wasps are also struggling to pay their playing staff this month, which might lead to a talent shortage similar to that that suffered by Worcester after being barred from the Premiership last month.

Wasps 36-40, Northampton: Hosts near to government and relegation, as well as the Saints' narrow defeat

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 9, 2022
CHRIS FOY OF COVENTRY BUILDING SOCIETY ARENA: Wasps was defeated in an agonizing loss, but there is more to come. Despite Lawrence Dallaglio's appeal for leniency, the latest reports suggest that they are heading for government and relegation. Lee Blackett's team squandered a 16-point lead to lose their third Premiership game of the season, but the bigger picture is more bleak and profound. Wasps will have to pay an outstanding tax bill this week or face a winding-up order from HMRC. Following Worcester's relegation, the club is struggling to repay a £35 million debt from a bond scheme used to finance their relocation to the West Midlands, and there are growing concerns that a potential buy-out is dependent on the club's stability.

On Friday night, Bristol and Sale were supposed to kick-off the season against Northampton Saints, but those games were now postponed to Saturday and Sunday respectively. Professional rugby in England will continue in England as the matches originally scheduled for Saturday will resume as normal, unlike football's Premier League.

Bosss Rob Baxter, who chairs Exeter University, has a hands-off warning to England

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 7, 2022
BY ALEX BYWATER: The Rugby Football Union has been advised not to worry about appointing Rob Baxter as the successor to outgoing England head coach Eddie Jones, who has been left out of office. Australian Jones, who has been in charge of this country since 2015, will leave his position after next year's World Cup in France, and the hunt for his replacement is ongoing. In remarks that suggested Baxter and Leicester's Steve Borthwick, another Gallagher Premiership-winning coach, were among the leading candidates for the role, RFU chief executive Bill Sweeney said in March that he would like the next England manager to be English.

LUTHER BURRELL: Eddie Jones blames England's lack of leaders on public schools but it's his fault

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 13, 2022
LUTHERBURRELL FOR THE MAIL on SUNDAY: According to Eddie Jones, English rugby players who are educated privately do not have sufficient leadership skills or knowledge to cope with adversity. England, according to him, should blow the system up to try to increase the chances of future success. These words had me confused. It was an odd moment to make them. They came off the back of an Australia series that, although not entirely successful, saw England return to winning ways. Any series victories in the southern hemisphere are to be lauded, but rather than everyone being excited about the achievement, people are now viewing the negative face of English rugby, owing to Eddie's words. In that sense, he is deflecting away from himself. I'm not sure why you did that. Leadership does not have to be in your DNA, according to my view. Because they have been in enduringly difficult times, several of the best leaders have it embedded in them and rely on it.
