Lauren Elizabeth Potter (born May 10, 1990) is an American actress best known for her role as Becky Jackson on FOX's Glee.

Potter is a spokesperson for people with disabilities, including AbilityPath, Best Buddies International, the Down Syndrome Association, the American Association of People with Disabilities, and Special Olympics.

Early life

Potter was born on May 10, 1990, and he grew up Inland Empire in Southern California. She was diagnosed with Down syndrome at birth. She didn't have the ability to walk before the age of 2, but she did start attending dancing and acting classes at a young age. She graduated from Riverside Polytechnic High School in Riverside, California, and she was attending Irvine Valley College in Irvine, California, as of late 2011.

Potter played Mr. Blue Sky, her first acting role in the film at the age of 16.

Potter portrayed Becky Jackson, a cheerleader with Down syndrome, in all six seasons of the television show Glee from 2009 to 2015. Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch), Sue's older sister, has Down syndrome, and she is keen on Becky. Potter was nominated for a SAG award in the Ensemble in a Comedy Series category in 2012 for her role in Glee. At the 2012 Media Access Awards, she also received the SAG/AFTRA Harold Russell Award.

Potter was appointed by President Barack Obama to the President's Committee on Intellectual Disabilities in November 2011, where she would advise the White House on topics related to that group. Twenty-one senators and 13 members of the United States federal government are among the committee's 13 participants. The committee will address a variety of topics impacting people with disabilities throughout the year, including education and workplace integration issues.

Potter appeared in the short film Guest Room, which premiered at SXSW in 2015. Potter was a young woman with Down syndrome who lived with the challenges of an unplanned pregnancy.

Potter was a spokesman for the 2015 Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles. She served as a speaker and role model in promoting inclusion and disability awareness.

Potter, a young child, has joined AbilityPath to put an end to bullying. In addition, she works with Special Olympics to help promote the Spread the Word to End the Word campaign. Jane Lynch co-starred in a 2011 PSA commercial. The commercial, "Not Acceptable," calls for the removal of the R-word from everyday speech.

As of 2016, Potter continues to speak out about these causes around the country.

Multiple news outlets announced on August 3, 2016 that Potter's childhood-friend-turned-boyfriend Timothy Speare had proposed to her with a promise ring. Both parents of Down syndrome and their families had known each other since childhood. However, it was announced on February 22, 2017 that their engagement had ended over the holidays.
