Lauren Helen Graham (born March 16, 1967) is an American actress and writer.
Lorelai Gilmore on the television series "Gilmore Girls" (2000–2007 and 2016), for which she received honors from the Screen Actors Guild, Golden Globe, and Satellite Awards, as well as Sarah Braverman on the NBC television drama Parenthood (2010–2015). Early life
Graham was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and was a member of the Honolulu family. Donna Grant, her mother, and Lawrence Graham, her father, is a candy industry lobbyist who has served as president of the National Confectioners Association. Graham was raised in her father's Catholic faith (her maternal grandfather was a Baptist minister); she is of Irish, English, and Scottish descent. Lauren lived in Japan for a few years as the daughter of a missionary when Graham's father worked at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Vietnam.
Graham was five years old when her parents divorced and moved to Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC, with her father, who became a congressional staffer, while her mother, who died in 2005, at the age of 61. "I thought I had it better," she said about her father and their close family relationship. My dad has a mellow attitude towards him, and I was a self-starter as a youth. I liked being on my own for a certain length. "It's just worked well for me." Graham spent a few years in Southampton, New York, while researching her childhood. Graham rode horses competitively as a youth but then moved to acting, honing her skills at Langley High School, where she joined the drill team and graduated in 1984. After two years in summer stock at the Barn Theatre in Augusta, Michigan, she earned her actor's Equity Card in 1988. Graham first attended New York University but then transferred to Barnard College. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from Barnard College of Columbia University in 1988. Graham earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in Acting from Southern Methodist University in 1992 after moving to Texas.

From 2010 to 2021, Graham had a friendship with actor Peter Krause. They first met in 1995 when they both appeared in the sitcom Caroline in the City, before becoming a couple on Parenthood.

Acting career
Graham returned to New York City, where she worked as a waitress and as a tutor tutor assisting in SAT test preparation for The Princeton Review. Although she aspired to be an actress, she made public appearances sporting Striker's costume, the 1994 FIFA World Cup's dog mascot. In 1995, she moved to Hollywood. She appeared in numerous commercials for Cascade dishwasher detergent, Dimetapp, AT&T, and Lean Cuisine, as well as hosting free preview weekends on The Movie Channel.
Graham appeared on many television shows from 1996 to 1997. She played a graduate student on 3rd Rock from the Sun, Richard's overly optimistic girlfriend on Caroline in the City; and Jerry's Seinfeld's speed-dial ranking girlfriend. In a three-part episode of Law & Order, she appeared opposite Scott Cohen, who would later play one of Graham's love interests (Max Medina) on Gilmore Girls.
