Laurel Holloman Life

Laurel Lisa Holloman (born May 23, 1971) is an American painter and actress.

She is best known for playing Tina Kennard in The L Word.

Early life

Holloman is the youngest child in her family. She has two older brothers. She graduated from Saint Mary's School, an Episcopal boarding school for girls in Raleigh, in 1986. She attended the University of North Carolina where she graduated with a degree in Performance Communication. She appeared in numerous theater productions in Chapel Hill and Raleigh, as well as in Chicago and London. She studied painting and sculpting at UCLA and at The San Francisco Art Institute.

Personal life

Holloman married architect Paul Macherey on July 13, 2002. They have a daughter, Lola Reiko Macherey. They adopted a second daughter, Nala Belle (meaning 'beautiful gift'). In 2011, Holloman filed for divorce, which was finalized on June 18, 2012.

Career

Holloman, a UNC graduate, moved to Chicago to work with the Piven Theatre Workshop. She studied with John Lynn in Los Angeles and was cast in David Orr's independent film Blossom Time. In early 1994, she moved to New York City and appeared in stage plays including Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie, Carson McCullers' The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter at the Theatre for the New City. In Julia Jordan's Night Swim at Playwright's Horizons, Holloman also performed off-Broadway.

Holloman began her film career in 1995 as Randy Dean in The Incredibly True Love of Two Girls. She appeared in a number of mostly independent film roles, such as The Myth of Fingerprints, Boogie Nights, and Tumbleweeds, to name a few.

Holloman appeared in showtime's show The L Word as Tina Kennard in 2005. She was named Best Actress in a Drama series in 2005 for her role. Despite resuming acting to pursue a career in painting, she briefly returned to reprise her role in two episodes of The L Word: Generation Q.

Holloman spent her time in Los Angeles painting in Los Angeles after her acting career. Mark Rothko's paintings were influenced by her vibrant use of color and large scale pieces, as well as elements of three-dimensional illusion. Holloman's paintings, although mainly abstract, depict a distinct literary spirituality. Free Falling, a performance held at the Ateneo Veneto in Venice, Italy, received rave reviews. In La Repubblica, art critic Lea Mattarella reviewed Holloman's paintings: "Holloman's paintings take us elsewhere, and it's what art is all about."

"Swell," Holloman's painting, was selected to be part of the Venice Biennale group show "Nell' Acqua Capisco." At the 2014 Contemporary Art Biennale of Argentina, she took 1st place in Discipline Painting. Holloman participated in two separate exhibits in the 2015 Florence Biennale and received a prize for "Into the Woods." "The Innocents" was her solo exhibition at the Menier Gallery in London in November 2015. In the Museum Jan Van der Togt's first solo museum exhibition, "Everglow," was on display in Amstelveen, Netherlands, from July 2016 to August 2016.
