Early life
Prepon was born in Watchung, New Jersey. She is the youngest of five children of Marjorie (née Coll), a high school mentor and gourmet home chef, and orthopedic surgeon Michael Prepon. Prepon's father died after heart surgery in 1993 at the age of 49; she was 13 years old at the time. She attended Watchung Hills Regional High School and then studied at the Total Theatre Lab in New York City. Her father, who was of Russian Jewish descent, was Jewish, and her mother, Mary Annette, has Irish Catholic roots. Union Army General Joseph Bradford Carr was her maternal great-grandfather.

Career
When in New York, Prepon appeared in plays including A Woman of Property and Ascension Day. She studied drama with acting coach Caroline Thomas at Thomas' Total Theatre Lab in 1996. Later in September 1997, she premiered on They Go On, a Web-based soap opera hosted by Levi Strauss. Prepon has also worked as a model and has shot photo shoots in Paris, Milan, and Brazil.
