Life and career

Lippman was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and raised in Columbia, Maryland. Madeline Mabry Lippman, a retired school librarian for the Baltimore City Public Schools, is the granddaughter of Theo Lippman, Jr., a Baltimore Sun reporter, and Madeline Mabry Lippman, a Baltimore Sun writer. Her paternal grandfather was Jewish, and the majority of her ancestry is Scots-Irish. Lippman was raised Presbyterian. She attended high school in Columbia, Maryland, where she was the captain of the Wilde Lake High School Academic staff. She has appeared in many dramatic performances, including Finian's Rainbow, The Lark, and Barefoot in the Park. In 1977, she graduated from Wilde Lake High School.

Lippmann is a former reporter for the San Antonio Light and The Baltimore Sun, which are now defunct. Tess Monaghan, a reporter turned private investigator, is best known for writing a series of novels set in Baltimore. Lippman's books have been nominated for Agatha, Anthony, Edgar, Nero, Gumshoe, and Shamus awards. What the Dead Know (2006) was the first of her books to make the New York Times Best Seller list, and she was shortlisted for the Crime Writer's Association Dagger Award. Every Secret Thing, a Tess Monaghan book, was turned into a 2014 film starring Diane Lane. Lady in the Lake's book was turned into a limited run for Apple.

Lippman lives in Federal Hill, South Baltimore, and he often writes in the neighborhood coffee shop Spoons. She teaches at Goucher College in Towson, Maryland, just south of Baltimore, in addition to writing. Lippman was a member of the 3rd Annual Writers in Paradise in January 2007. She was the guest of honor at Left Coast Crime in March 2013.

Lippman is married to David Simon, a former Baltimore Sun reporter and writer and executive producer of HBO's The Wire. In episode eight of The Wire's first season, Bunk is shown to be reading one of her books, In a Strange City. Lippman appeared in a scene in the first episode of The Wire's last season as a reporter in the Baltimore Sun newsroom.

Georgia Ray Simon, who was born in 2010, is Lippman and Simon's daughter.
