Career
Brown's media career began at the now-defunct Australian fashion magazine Mode, where she was a production editor for two years. Brown, a 21-year-old woman, then migrated to London for two years as a freelancer, as well as a reporter for Harper's Bazaar Australia. Brown spent her own way to Paris, where she crashed into fashion shows without a badge and snapped pictures on a disposable camera while freelancing in London. Brown was employed by Harper's Bazaar Australia as a features editor after returning to Australia, a position she held for two years.
Brown migrated to New York on September 4, 2001, having saved US$5,000. She was in the United States on a foreign journalist visa and was writing for newspapers outside of the United States, sending her cheques back to Australia for her mother's deposit into her bank account.
Brown had worked on Tina Brown's Talk magazine shortly before it was discontinued. She began as a senior editor at W and as an articles editor for the now-defunct men's magazine Details. Brown joined Harper's Bazaar in early 2005 and was in charge of selecting the magazine's front page. Many of the magazine's coups were produced by author Sophie de la Renta and Diane von Furstenberg on Sesame Street, from The Simpsons in Paris to fashion designers Oscar de la Renta and Diane von Furstenberg. Possibly Brown's best known feature was the one featuring Rihanna in a gold swimsuit inside a shark's jaws, marking the Steven Spielberg film Jaws' 40th anniversary. ASME's Best Fashion and Beauty Cover, a recreation of a photo of Spielberg posing the same way with Jaws, was named Best Fashion and Beauty Cover in 2016. While at Harper's Bazaar, Brown broke the exclusive interview with Janet Jackson after her brother Michael's death and profiled influential people, including Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama, as well as Laura Brown's "In and Out of Fashion." Brown had broken many of the most newsworthy news at her previous position, according to Time Inc.'s 22nd media release announcing Brown's appointment to InStyle. "She challenged the status quo by creating unconventional collaborations, including artists Takashi Murakami, John Baldessari, Francesco Clemente, and Cindy Sherman, as well as directors Martin Scorsese, Pedro Almodovar, and Tim Burton," Time Inc. reported.
Brown recalls editor-in-chief Glenda Bailey as a mentor during her time at Harper's Bazaar. InStyle's current editor-in-chief, Ariel Foxman, who had been at the helm of the magazine for eight years, has been taking over the company's leadership.
Brown used Emily Ratajkowski, a model who first came to fame in 2013 in Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines"'s video clip. In September 2017, InStyle's first man on the cover, comedian, and late-night TV host Stephen Colbert appeared. Brown covered Colbert for the special edition, which attracted 100,000 viewers. The newsstand issue featured Selena Gomez's more popular cover design, as well as these reports, Brown's first September issue, as the fifth annual Fashion Media Awards were held on September 8, 2017.
Oprah Winfrey, who was interviewed by Brown in March 2018, was included on InStyle's March 2018 cover.
In collaboration with Time Inc.'s "PeopleTV" network, Brown produces "Dirty Laundry" biweekly video series. Brown addresses celebrities in a laundromat, and each video reveals personal tales behind her most coveted outfits and accessories. With actress Priyanka Chopra, the series premiered on May 25, 2017.
She was one of the guest judges in Miss USA 2016 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. She appeared on Bravo's The Fashion Show alongside Iman and Isaac Mizrahi, and CNN's American Morning.
Brown partnered with Australian handbag brand Mon Purse to create a capsule collection in 2016. "The Boss Lady" tote bag, "The Girl on the Go" bucket bag, and "The Minx" evening sack are among the three styles included in the collection. The collaboration was scheduled to coincide with the brand's introduction in the United States. When Brown returned to Australia for a holiday, she was introduced to Mon Purse founder Lana Hopkins through a mutual friend, and a partnership was formed.
Brown debuted the InStyle "Ladies First" podcast on December 1, 2020, where she talked to trailblazers about their historic "firsts" in the industry.
