Lara Flynn Boyle Career

Career

Boyle's Day Off, John Hughes' teen comedy film Ferris Bueller's Day Off, earning her a SAG card, but her scenes were cut from the film's final cut. Boyle appeared in Amerika (1987), followed by guest appearances on episodes of the series Jack and Mike (1987) and Sable (1987).

Boyle received a lead role in the Gary Sherman horror film Poltergeist III (1988), which was distributed by MGM. Although she was starred in Peter Weir's drama film Dead Poets Society (1989), her scenes were eventually deleted from the final film.

Boyle rose to international prominence in 1989 when David Lynch portrayed Donna Hayward in the cult television series Twin Peaks (1990-1991). Laura Palmer, Laura Palmer's best friend, was the subject of the series's murder. Laura's main storyline was focused on her questing to solve Laura's mystery.

The series premiered on ABC on April 8, 1990, and later became one of the top-rated series of 1990, but a loss in viewers caused the series's cancellation after its second season in 1991. Boyle appeared in all 30 episodes.

"I remember doing a long scene where we had to shoot 30 or 40 times," Boyle said when debating Lynch's direction. David came up to me and said, 'Think of how gently a deer must move in the snow.' But here's a look at it. We were on the helm of a piece of heaven on Twin Peaks, and we went where David Lynch told us. That may seem to be a little confusing, but it is actually true. How he sees the world is how we should all see the world.

Boyle, who was promoting Twin Peaks in October 1990, was featured on the front page of Rolling Stone magazine alongside her co-stars Mädchen Amick and Sherilyn Fenn. Sarah was portrayed by Boyle in Clint Eastwood's action film The Rookie (1990), Rosarita in Adam Rifkin's satirical comedy film Mobsters (1991), and Sandra Gladstone in the romantic drama Eye of the Storm (1991).

Boyle appeared in the television film Terror on Highway 91 (1989), The Preppie Murder (1989), as well as episodes of The Hidden Room and May Wine.

Plans for a feature film version were being made just after the cancellation of Twin Peaks. Boyle was asked by Lynch to reprise her role as Donna Hayward in Larry Rocco's psychological thriller Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992), but she was unable to commit to the project due to scheduling conflicts with her role as Heather in Penelope Spheeris' comedy Where the Day Takes You (1992), Shannon Franks in Alan Rudolph's crime drama Equinox. Moira Kelly was brought on to her replacement. Boyle appeared as Kris Bolin in the 1993 thriller film The Temptress and portrayed temptress Suzanne Brown alongside Nicolas Cage and Dennis Hopper in the neo-noir film Red Rock West.

Boyle was cast as Alex in the comedy Threesome, Laraine Cotwell in Baby's Day Out, and Ida Muntz in The Road to Wellville in 1994. Boyle appeared in the television series Past Tense and Jacob this year. Pat Ward was cast as Pat Ward in the 1996 film Cafe Society's mystery film. Marianne Byron was played in the film Afterglow in 1997. Boyle auditioned for the lead role in David E. Kelley's Ally McBeal's Ally McBeal. Although she lost out to Calista Flockhart, Boyle was enthralled enough to cast her as Assistant District Attorney Helen Gamble in his other 1997 film, The Practice. Helen Jordan appeared in Todd Solondz's controversial comedy-drama film Happiness the following year.

She appeared on The Practice until 2003, when she and the majority of the cast were forced to re-invent the show and cut costs. Helen Gamble's performance earned her an Emmy Award and several other Screen Actors Guild ensemble cast nominations. Boyle appeared in a crossover performance as Helen Gamble in an Ally McBeal episode and an uncredited guest appearance on the same program in its final season.

Boyle appeared in Men in Black II, as the villainous shapeshifting alien Serleena. She appeared on one of Ally McBeal's last episodes, this time as Tally Cupp, and she appeared on several episodes of Huff.

Boyle was a new hotel owner in Las Vegas for seven years as Monica Mancuso, a five-episode stint. Barbara Amiel appeared in the television film Shades of Black about Amiel and her husband, Lord Black. In the Law & Order 2008 episode "Submission," Boyle also appeared as an astute journalist in a potential murder.

Boyle portrayed Mary in Baby on Board in 2009. In the independent film Life Is Hot in Cracktown the same year, Boyle was cast as Betty McBain. Kathy performed in Cougar Hunting in 2010. In the horror film Hansel & Gretel Get Baked, Boyle portrayed Witch Agnes in 2013. Ms. Donley appeared in Lucky Dog, a 2015 film.
