Laeta Kalogridis Career

Writing career

In In Nomine Dei, Kalogridis wrote a spec script about Joan of Arc early in her career. In April 1994, she sold the script to Warner Bros., but no film was ever made. She appeared in March 1995 as the early script for X-Men, a blockbuster film that was released in 2000. She did uncredited work on the script for Scream 3 in late 1999.

She was hired to write the screenplay for Lara Croft: Tomb Raider's 2001 film version in September 2000. The 2002 series Birds of Prey was created, executive produced, and wrote several episodes. She was involved in the rewrite of Warner Bros' Wonder Woman live action film adaptation in September 2003, but she did not receive a screenwriting credit. She was then named as the screenwriter of the English language version of the 2004 film Night Watch and later wrote the script for the 2004 film Alexander.

She worked on a Columbia Pictures remake of The Lone Ranger in January 2005. She co-authored Borgia, an ImageMovers film about the Borgia family in 15th century Rome, in November 2005. In February 2006, she began writing The Dive, director James Cameron's upcoming film about freediver Francisco "Pipin" Ferraras and his wife Audrey Mestre.

Alita: Battle Angel, director James Cameron's upcoming film based on the classic cyberpunk manga Battle Angel Alita, was published in January 2007. She wrote a rewrite of the vampire film Darksiders for New Line Cinema in October 2007. She was screenwriter for Pathfinder, the 2007 film. She was also the executive producer for the 2007 TV series Bionic Woman, as well as writing the pilot. Bionic Woman was fired in part because she was told she "didn't know how to write women" and was replaced by a male writer.

Kalogridis became involved as a peacemaker in the Writers Guild of America's strike from 2007-2008, coworking with writers and producers to find a solution. "Ms. Kalogridis and her allies," the New York Times announced, "Ms. Kalogridis and her allies..." had deteriorated into a pipeline to the guild members who were looking for substantial gains, but whose help would be needed if no agreement was reached." She is also the creator of the pro-union website Hollywood United.

She was the executive producer of director James Cameron's 2009 blockbuster Avatar. Shutter Island's executive producer and screenwriter was Robin Jones, a writer for the 2010 film Shutter Island. In 2018, she was a producer on The House with a Clock in Its Walls. She was also the writer, screenwriter, and executive producer of Altered Carbon, a Netflix scifi film that premiered in February 2018. She continues to work on the manga Alita: Battle Angel co-writer, as well as James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez, which was released on February 14, 2019. Since 2016, she has been writing and producing Netflix's untitled Sword Art Online live-action film. In an interview, she said she was writing the pilot and not to "whitewash" the story.

Kate Aurthur of BuzzFeed News broke the news that Kalogridis is writing a script for a new version of the BioWare and LucasArts video game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. BuzzFeed describes the effort as a "potential trilogy."
