Ladyhawke Life

Phillipa Margaret "Pip" Brown (born 13 July 1979), also known as Ladyhawke on stage, is a New Zealand singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.

She took her stage name from Richard Donner's 1985 film Ladyhawke. Brown was a member of the Wellington-based band Two Lane Blacktop (2001-2003), before heading to Australia, where she formed the art rock band Teenager with Nick Littlemore of Pnau in 2004.

In 2007, she moved to London but then relocated to Los Angeles around 2013.Brown's debut solo album, Ladyhawke, was released on September 22, 2008 by Modular Recordings, and she topped the RIANZ Albums Chart.

It was one of five singles, the most well-received of which "My Delirium" was the most popular.

Ladyhawke was named Top Breakthrough Artist in both album and single categories at the ARIA Music Awards of 2009. Anxiety Brown's second solo album, Anxiety, was released in May 2012, and her third solo album, Wild Things, was released on June 3rd 2016.

Early life

Phillipa Margaret Brown was born in Masterton, a town in New Zealand's Wairarapa region. She comes from a musical family, with her mother being a singer-guitarist and her stepfather, a jazz drummer. During her childhood, she suffered with various illnesses and allergies, which kept her in and out of the hospital. She died of erysipeloid, a disease that is common in seagulls and sharks, but not in humans in New Zealand for twenty years. Her allergies to antibiotics and antihistamines made medical treatment very difficult, almost ending her life and taking her into a coma.

Brown has been diagnosed with Asperger syndrome. She believes that the large amount of her childhood she spent in music, whether it was listening to the radio or to her mother's Beatles and Pretenders albums, was attributable to this disorder.

She performed in several grunge bands while attending Chanel College. Brown went from Masterton to Wellington after high school.

Personal life

Brown is a lesbian. Madeleine Sami, a New Zealand actress, comedian, and filmmaker, married on January 9, 2015, on the 9th anniversary. In 2013, she moved from London to Los Angeles. She announced her pregnancy on June 20, 2017. She returned to Auckland, NZ, in 2017 after a police shooting near their apartment. Billie Jean, Billie Jean's first child, was born on October 20th, her first child.

Brown is a huge fan of video games, referring to herself as "a huge, big gamer."

Brown has a contralto vocal range.

Ladyhawke Career

Recording career

Brown formed the band Two Lane Blacktop with some of their peers in 2001, playing lead guitar. The group, according to Iggy and The Stooges, is "like The Clash." Two Lane Blacktop's time with the famed New York City club CBGB as a defining moment. In 2003, Two Lane Blacktop's lead singer, Matt Harrop, and drummer Phil Smiley split from the band two days before a planned tour of Australia with Modey Lemon, before which they were due to play at SXSW in Austin, Texas. Brown made the decision to fly to Australia instead, and she and her partner then relocated to Melbourne.

Some time after Brown's removal to Melbourne, Sydney-based musician Nick Littlemore of Pnau (he later formed Empire of the Sun) learned of her relocation and asked if she was interested in joining an art rock band that he had started named Teenager. Brown loved Littlemore's music and decided to join in 2004. Brown and Littlemore performed together for two years, with Brown relocating to Sydney to be closer to the band, as well as other people she loved playing and writing music with. In the 2008 video game Grand Theft Auto IV, a teen's song "Pony" is included.

In 2006, the teenager's debut album Thirteen, as well as the related singles "Pony" and "Bound and Gagged" were released. Craig Mathieson of Mess + Noise characterized the album as "a pop record," although it's also a particular exotic species with a slew of clues of self-indulgence when the album's organic and desperate growth of 'Bound And Gagged' is so much more impressive." "Alone Again" and "West" for Teenager co-wrote Brown and Littlemore. Brown departed early after the album's debut, and she later credited Littlemore: Brown moved to concentrate on her work as Ladyhawke.

Brown, who was still close to Littlemore, has decided to leave Teenager to concentrate on a personal venture she had been planning for some time, a person she had dubbed Ladyhawke. She named herself after a character played by Michelle Pfeiffer in the 1985 film of the same name because she sees herself as "a sort of pop superwoman making radio-friendly songs with a single bound." Brown says she started Ladyhawke out of a desire to do her own thing in which she could fully express herself in whatever way she desired. "I wanted to make music that would put a smile on people's faces and give them a sense of nostalgia," she says, even though they are seeing my songs for the first time. I love how music brings back memories of a certain period, so I wanted to see if I could find a way of songwriting that would evoke those thoughts from me on writing the album and then on the individual when listening to it for the first time."

Modular Recordings released Ladyhawke's eponymous debut album on September 22, 2008. One year after its debut in October 2009, the album was ranked number one on the charts in New Zealand, and the Recording Industry Association of New Zealand awarded platinum for sales in excess of 15,000 copies. It reached number sixteen in both Australia and the United Kingdom, where it was certified gold. "My Delirium," the country's top ten hit song, charted inside the top ten in both New Zealand and Australia, was the top ten.

Ladyhawke was in the Top 100 for the first time in 2008; "My Delirium" at number eleven and "Paris Is Burning" at number six. At number one, Pnau's song "Embrace," which stars Ladyhawke, was voted in at number 12. Brown was nominated for the NME Award for Best Solo Artist.

On eBay, a limited 7-inch version of "Back of the Van"—each one hand painted by Sarah Larnach — was selling. The Parkinsons Society of New Zealand received all funds.

In August 2009, it was announced that she would co-headline a North American tour with Ida Maria, beginning in Atlanta and concluding in Los Angeles on October 3rd. Perez Hilton, a well-funded celebrity, sponsored the tour.

Ladyhawke said in April 2011 that she was planning to publish new information in the coming months. Her second album was supposed to be released in October 2011, but a spokesperson said in September that it was not going to be released until 2012. Later this year, it was revealed that Anxiety would be a collection of songs. Anxiety's release date was postponed until May 2012.

Ladyhawke said in a digital Spy interview, "I'm really proud of this album," she said, so I can't wait to start playing with the band again, touring and having some fun. I can't wait to get back to it.

On January 24, 2012, Anxiety's lead single, "Black White & Blue," was released as Anxiety's lead single. In April, the single "Sunday Drive" appeared, and in late May, the album itself was released. "Blue Eyes," the third single from the band, was released in July 2012.

Her song "Blue Eyes" was featured in a string of Verizon commercials in the United States in February 2014.

Ladyhawke's third solo album will be released on March 28th. The album was complete by the middle of 2015. Wild Things was the first half of 2016. Two songs, "A Love Song" and "Sweet Fascination," were in anticipation. On June 3, 2016, the album was released. In an advertisement for Australian telecommunications firm Optus, her song "Let It Roll" was used. In the soundtrack to the 2016 racing video game Forza Horizon 3, "The River" and "A Love Song" are included.

Ladyhawke revealed on September 24, 2020, she was in the studio mixing a new record that would be released soon. In March 2021, she announced that she had signed a new brand and publishing contract with BMG. "Guilty Love," the album's first single and a partnership with Broods singer Georgia Nott, was released on March 5, 2021. Time Flies, the album's second single, "Mixed Emotions," debuted on May 27th, 2021. The album was supposed to be released on October 8, 2021, but the release date was postponed to 19 November 2021. After being diagnosed with Clark's level-four melanoma shortly after her daughter's birth, Ladyhawke described herself as "lucky and privileged to be alive and in a room making music." "There were a few weeks where they couldn't tell me if they were going to live, but that it hadn't spread was something of a miracle." It was so bad that it should have gone everywhere." After going through medical and recovery, Ladyhawke was approved by her specialist. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Time Flies began recording sessions, with sessions taking place during video calls with producers Tommy English and Josh Fountain.
