Early life and career

Phillips was born in Illinois and grew up in Jacksonville, Florida. She moved to San Diego, California, where her parents became professors at San Diego State University in the fourth grade. Phillips received a bachelor's degree in journalism from University of Southern California after graduating from Helix High School. WLUK-TV in Green Bay, Wisconsin, was one of her first jobs in broadcasting before moving to WDSU-TV in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1994. Phillips has also served as the morning anchor for KAMC-TV in Lubbock, Texas, field producer for CNN-Telemundo's Washington, D.C. headquarters, and a reporter for KCBS-TV's special assignment unit in Los Angeles, California. Phillips, T.A.P.S., in addition to her regular duties on HLN, is involved in the Brain Tumor Foundation for Children. (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors), The Global Down Syndrome Foundation and Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, which she has been associated with since 1992.

Career

Phillips first appeared on CNN in 1999. Phillips was given access to the United States Navy Air Wing CVW-9 in 2001 as they braced for the war in Afghanistan during her early days on CNN. Phillips stayed about a month in Antarctica to film a television documentary that would be seen on CNN Presents in January 2002. Phillips published articles later this year focusing on the US Navy's reconnaissance missions, including the Navy's Special Operations Command, the Navy SEALs, and Special Warfare Combatant Crewman training in an F-14 Tomcat during an air-to-air combat mission over the Persian Gulf. She has also served in the Navy's TOPGUN academy, SWAT academy, and other police and weapons training.

During the 2003 invasion of Iraq, where she reported from the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, she was an embedded journalist. Phillips was the last journalist to fly in an F-14 Tomcat before officially retiring from service in the United States Navy in 2006.

Phillips co-anchored CNN Radio's November 4, 2008 election coverage with Capitol Hill reporter Lisa Desjardins.

Phillips migrated to the 11am Newsroom in March 2012, and her timeslot was reduced to one hour. However, CNN announced on June 26, 2012, that she would leave CNN and debut her own show at its sister channel HLN. She soon returned to CNN as a "investigative reporter."

Phillips left CNN on Sunday to join ABC News as a "D.C.-based correspondent."

Phillips wrote a tweet on July 19, 2019, praising President Donald Trump for "giving us [journalists] access on a daily basis and the ability to ask any question." Many who viewed the comment as a "suck up" to the president, criticized Phillips.

When she was sent to Iraq rather than him, Don Lemon sent 'threatening texts' to a female colleague

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 5, 2023
Lemon was allegedly rude to Grace on the air, and O'Brien during an editorial meeting attended by about 30 employees, and O'Brien was accused of being sexist against Republican Candidate Nikki Haley.' It has also been reported that producers and executives had to take Lemon off the air while co-anchoring CNN's 'Live From' with Kyra Phillips. Tensions between the two companies have reportedly grown to the point that Lemon is accused of ripping up notes and photographs of Phillips n the desk that they shared. According to two sources, the incident occurred while Phillips was on vacation in Iraq - something that Lemon had been mad to be passed over for. 'Now you've crossed the line and you're going to pay for it,' he said.
