Early life and career
Phillips was born in Illinois and grew up in Jacksonville, Florida. She moved to San Diego, California, where her parents became professors at San Diego State University in the fourth grade. Phillips received a bachelor's degree in journalism from University of Southern California after graduating from Helix High School. WLUK-TV in Green Bay, Wisconsin, was one of her first jobs in broadcasting before moving to WDSU-TV in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1994. Phillips has also served as the morning anchor for KAMC-TV in Lubbock, Texas, field producer for CNN-Telemundo's Washington, D.C. headquarters, and a reporter for KCBS-TV's special assignment unit in Los Angeles, California. Phillips, T.A.P.S., in addition to her regular duties on HLN, is involved in the Brain Tumor Foundation for Children. (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors), The Global Down Syndrome Foundation and Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, which she has been associated with since 1992.
Career
Phillips first appeared on CNN in 1999. Phillips was given access to the United States Navy Air Wing CVW-9 in 2001 as they braced for the war in Afghanistan during her early days on CNN. Phillips stayed about a month in Antarctica to film a television documentary that would be seen on CNN Presents in January 2002. Phillips published articles later this year focusing on the US Navy's reconnaissance missions, including the Navy's Special Operations Command, the Navy SEALs, and Special Warfare Combatant Crewman training in an F-14 Tomcat during an air-to-air combat mission over the Persian Gulf. She has also served in the Navy's TOPGUN academy, SWAT academy, and other police and weapons training.
During the 2003 invasion of Iraq, where she reported from the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, she was an embedded journalist. Phillips was the last journalist to fly in an F-14 Tomcat before officially retiring from service in the United States Navy in 2006.
Phillips co-anchored CNN Radio's November 4, 2008 election coverage with Capitol Hill reporter Lisa Desjardins.
Phillips migrated to the 11am Newsroom in March 2012, and her timeslot was reduced to one hour. However, CNN announced on June 26, 2012, that she would leave CNN and debut her own show at its sister channel HLN. She soon returned to CNN as a "investigative reporter."
