Kumail Ali Nanjiani (born February 21, 1978) is a Pakistani-American stand-up comedian, actor, podcast host, and writer.

He is best known for his writing and starring in The Big Sick (2017) as a lead cast member of HBO's comedy series Silicon Valley (2014-2019).

Nanjiani was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for his writing the former with his wife Emily V. Gordon.

Time magazine named him one of the world's 100 most influential people in 2018. Nanjiani has also voiced Prismo on the animated series Adventure Time and appeared in TNT's Franklin & Bash and the Adult Swim series Newsreaders.

In addition to co-hosting The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail, as well as appearing in various aspects of the film Portlandia, he appeared in various scenes.

He has appeared in the film Stuber (2019).

Early life

Nanjiani grew up in Karachi, the first of two sons of Sindhi couple Shabana and Aijaz Nanjiani. He was raised in a devout Muslim family, but Nanjiani now refers to him as an atheist. Shereen Nanjiani, BBC radio presenter, is his second cousin. He was born in Karachi and attended St. Michael' Convent School for his O Levels and graduated from Karachi Grammar School to finish his A Levels, where he was the classfellow of Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy. He went to the United States and enrolled in Grinnell, Iowa, where he graduated in 2001 with a double major in computer science and philosophy. He then migrated to Chicago and began performing stand-up comedy at open-mic functions.

Personal life

Emily V. Gordon, a Chicago City Hall therapist, married author, producer, and former couples and family therapist Emily V. Gordon in 2007. She was the creator of The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail (2014–2016).

Despite being a devout Muslim for the majority of his life, Nanjiani now identifys as an atheist. Nanjiani is a huge video gamer.

Career

In 2007, Nanjiani produced and staged an original autobiographical one-man exhibition in Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles. Since moving to New York, he continued to perform stand-up and made occasional appearances on television programs including Michael & Michael Have Issues and The Colbert Report. He appeared at the Just for Laughs comedy festival in 2009. Ali Baker, a Nanjiani and X-Play employee, began hosting The Indoor Kids, a video game-themed podcast in 2011. Baker left the show and Nanjiani took over hosting with Emily V. Gordon in late August of the same year. He appeared on Dan Harmon's podcast Harmontown, where he played Dungeons & Dragons with Harmon as a character named Chris de Burgh before other commitments took over. In the 2013 film, The Kings of Summer, he appeared as a delivery man. Nanjiani appeared in various comedy shows, including Portlandia, in a supporting role in TNT's Franklin & Bash. He played Pindar Singh, an agoraphobic fiction nerd who was working on the title characters.

Nanjiani appeared on HBO's Veep as a statistician. He played Amir Larussa on Newsreaders, as well as Prismo on Adventure Time. In July 2013, a comedy Central special called Beta Male premiered. Comedy Central announced in late June 2013 that Jonah Ray and Nanjiani would co-star a show The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail. The program, which also starred Nerd Melt comedians and other comedians, debuted in July 2014. He began playing Dinesh in the HBO sitcom Silicon Valley in April 2014. In the video game The Walking Dead: Season Two, Reggie appeared. Nanjiani hosted The X-Files Files, a weekly podcast dedicated to discussion and fond reminiscences of The X-Files in July 2014. In light of the sarcastic banter regarding one or two episodes of the series, each episode features him and a guest, including former The X-Files writers, producers, actors, and directors. Nanjiani appeared on Ken Reid's TV Guidance Counselor Podcast on July 30, 2014.

Nanjiani appeared in "In Heat" on Broad City in 2015. He began speaking out about Mshak Moradi's character in the Hunt the Truth audio drama, as part of Halo 5: Guardians' marketing campaign. He appeared on Inside Amy Schumer, a parody of 12 Angry Men, on May 5, 2015 as one of the jury's members. Nanjiani appeared on Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero in July 2015.

In 2017, Nanjiani appeared in The Big Sick, a romantic comedy film that he co-authored with his wife Emily V. Gordon. The film is about their love, with Nanjiani playing himself and Gordon playing Gordon (renamed Emily Gardner). The film was one of the year's most well-known films, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay by the American Film Institute. It was also the third highest grossing independent film to be released in 2017, grossing more than $40 million.

He was invited to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' actors and writers section in 2018.

In 2019, Nanjiani headlined the first episode of the CBS All Access revival of the anthology film The Twilight Zone. Nanjiani was nominated for his work on The Twilight Zone for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series. In a film called "Mega in Men," Nanjiani voiced the alien Pawny in Men, which was released on June 14. "I'm an alien, so you won't see my face, but you'll hear my voice, "I'm a little alien frog/lizard," Nanjiani said. "It's a thing" is the product of an artist's imagination. Nanjiani also stars in the action-comedy film Stuber, which was released on July 12. In the adventure comedy film Dolittle, Nanjiani lent his voice to Plimpton, an ostrich. He also wrote about and produced Little America, an Apple TV+ anthology film that premiered in January 2020. The story is based on Epic Magazine's story collection, which focuses on immigrants' stories. Nanjiani appeared at the Apple Event of March 25, 2019 to promote the series. In the comedy-chase film The Lovebirds, directed by Michael Showalter, and released by Netflix in May 2020, Nanjiani appeared with Issa Rae.

Keeping In with Emily and Kumail, Nanjiani and his partner Emily Gordon launched a podcast in March 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. During the global pandemic, the series chronicles their experiences as a couple forced to live in anonymity. The podcast has been widely distributed in media as a welcome antidote to a period of intense anxiety. "Continently endearing, actually useful, and often amusing," GQ's commentator described it as "consistently endearing, actually useful, and often amusing." According to a New York magazine, "all advice is shared via cute and charming banter."

He appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Eternals, which was released on November 5, 2021. Since posting photos of his body transformation for the 2019 shooting of Eternals, Nanjiani attracted a lot of attention and went viral. He explained to GQ, how he has since been less able to talk about his body due to the sheer amount of attention it got online. Nanjiani was announced as cast in a new Obi-Wan Kenobi series for Disney+ in March 2021.

Nanjiani announced his participation in The Independent, a political thriller directed by Amy Rice in February 2020.
