Life and career

DeBarge, the niece of James DeBarge, was born in 1990. DeBarge began singing at three years old, but she didn't begin to practice it seriously until she was 12. When she was 12, her father took her into a recording studio where they worked until 4 a.m., which made her father realize that she was serious about starting a singing career.

She appeared on American Idol spin-off, American Juniors, in Summer 2003. DeBarge qualified for the semi-final round of 20 contestants. She was selected in the first batch of ten semi-finalists and performed "Reflection" from Disney's film Mulan's "Reflection." However, she was not one of the five children to progress from that group to the final ten.

DeBarge is of mixed race. Her father is of African, English, and French Canadian descent. Her mother is of Mexican, Irish, Scottish, English, Norwegian, Norwegian, Spanish, and French descent. DeBarge's ancestors on her mother's side include Robert Sevier, 6th great-grandfather (first member of the Watauga Association/founding father of Tennessee), and John Sevier, the first cousin of Frida Kahlo. King Robert I of France and Lady Margaret Erskine are two of her mother's distant relatives.

Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds was introduced to DeBarge at 14 years old. She worked with him for five years and then signed Sodapop Records, which was founded by Edmonds and Jeff Burroughs, two days before her nineteenth birthday. DeBarge's first single "Goodbye" from her debut album Exposed was released in April 2009. The single debuted at number 75 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, and later reached a record of number 15 on the charts, with commercial success in the United States. The single was also a success in Canada, where it reached a top position of number 15 on the Canadian Hot 100. On July 28, 2009, the deposed was released. Based on a total score of 69/100 from Metacritic, the exposed received generally favorable feedback from music critics. The album debuted at number 23 on the Billboard 200 in the United States. During Spears' 2009 world tour, The Circus Starring: Britney Spears, DeBarge opened up for pop singer Britney Spears.

In November 2009, The Wet Seal, Inc., a leading specialty store for young people, announced a collaboration with DeBarge that included a series of DeBarge's favorites. In January 2010, DeBarge received a certificate from the NAACP Image Award for "Outstanding New Artist." DeBarge appeared in School Gyrls, the Nickelodeon debut in March 2010. DeBarge's debut "Cry Wolf" from her exclusive Japan album Young & Restless was released in September 2012. On her VEVO artist page, the "Cry Wolf" music video premiered in October 2012. On January 17, 2014, DeBarge was featured on Redrama's latest single and music video "Let Go." On February 1, 2014, DeBarge and Redrama appeared on live television in Finland's finals of the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 at the Barona Areena in Espoo. The single in Finland was a huge success, with No. 1 coming out. On February 4, 2014, No. 1 on the NRJ's Top ten list and No. 1 on the NRJ's Top 10 List, and No. 104 on the NRJ's Top ten list, with No. 1 and No. 1 ranked. On February 7, 2014, Spotify launched the 1 on Spotify. The single hit a record of No. 1 in the United States. 3 on the Finnish Single Charts. The "Amethyst Collection" (a 17 piece vegan brush set), the "Aplysina Blender" (a makeup sponge), and the "3D Inlashuation Mascara" (a waterproof and smudge free mascara that sold out within minutes) was launched by the online retailer on November 23, 2018.
