Early life and family

Bell was born in Huntington Woods, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, where she was raised. Lorelei (née Frygier) is a registered nurse, and her father, Tom Bell, works as a television news director in Las Vegas, Nevada. When she was two years old, her parents divorced. Bell has two stepmothers and a stepbrother from her mother's second marriage. Her mother is of Polish descent, and her father has German, Scottish, and Irish roots.

Bell claimed that she did not like her first name at the age of four. Bell's mother begged her to use Anne instead; rather, she used the word Annie until high school.

Bell's parents decided to exclude her from the public school system right before her first year of high school. She attended Shrine Catholic High School in nearby Royal Oak, where she participated in the drama and music clubs. She attended Burton Elementary School and Norup Middle School (now known as Norup International School), which is part of the Berkley School District, prior to attending Shrine. Dorothy Gale, a student at the University of Oz, was one of the school's 1997 production of The Wizard of Oz, and Li'l Abner (1998). Bell was named the yearbook's "Best Looking Girl" in 1998, the year she spent in high school.

Bell enrolled in Tisch School of the Arts in New York City, focusing on musical theater, just shy of her high school graduation. Bell dropped a few credits shy of graduating to appear in the Broadway musical version of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer in 2002.

Personal life

Bell's five-year relationship with former fiancé Kevin Mann came to an end in 2007. She later told Complex magazine that dating "makes me want to vomit." And not out of grossness—ok, a little bit out of grossness, but not out of nerves... "I've always been a serial monogamist."

Bell began dating actress Dax Shepard, who is also from Metro Detroit, in late 2007. In January 2010, the couple announced their engagement. They decided not to marry until the state of California passed legislation authorizing same-sex marriage. They co-starred in When in Rome, the 2012 film Hit and Run, and the 2017 film CHiPs. Bell begged Shepard to marry her through Twitter, which he accepted after section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act was ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court on June 26, 2013. On October 16, 2013, the two were married at the Beverly Hills County Clerk's Office. They have two children who were born in 2013 and 2014.

Bell became a vegetarian at age 11. "I have always been an animal lover," Bell said in a PETA interview. I had a difficult time dissociating the animals I cuddled with, for example, dogs and cats, but the meat on my plate wasn't particularly concerned about the texture of meat. "I always loved my Brussels sprouts." Bell became vegan with Shepard by 2012 after watching the film Forks Over Knives. However, she returned to eating dairy products and eggs during her first pregnancy.

Bell rescued animals from the Michigan Humane Society during her time in Michigan, and she now supports the Helen Woodward Animal Center in San Diego. Bell volunteers regularly attends fundraisers for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and other non-profit groups dedicated to protecting animals. She has owned several dogs, including Lola, a Welsh Cork-Chihua mix who was 11 years old when she was rescued from Hurricane Katrina and adopted by Bell in 2005.

Bell has confirmed that she is not religious and identifies as a feminist. She and her partner, Dax Shepard, are anti-vaccination. "I love going to 20 minutes because it's like shutting off light switches in my brain," she says of the Transcendental Meditation scheme.

"The writers are just looking for some fairness," Bell said of the Writer Guild of America in the writers' strike.

Invisible Children, Inc., Bell and other Veronica Mars cast members, including Ryan Hansen, are partnered with the charity Invisible Children, Inc. The organisation's aim is to bring to light the plight of Northern Ugandans who are trapped in the midst of a civil war between the government and Joseph Kony's Lord's Resistance Army.

During the 2008 US presidential race, Bell endorsed and campaigned for Barack Obama. She and Rashida Jones visited Missouri colleges to learn about the candidates and encourage voter registration to be encouraged.

Kristen Bell, along with actress Ryan Devlin, Todd Grinnell, and Ravi Patel, founded This Bar Saves Lives in 2013 to combat hunger. Children in Haiti, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Somalia are among the beneficiaries of the company's food donation in the form of nutrition packets. As of February 2019, the company has sold more than 10 million packets since its inception.

Bell's inaugural Prizeo campaign in 2014 offered fans a chance to win a date with her in exchange for donating to Invisible Children Inc. Bell, specifically the Gift of Life Marrow Registry, appeared on television in 2018. On the Gift of Life website, her behavior resulted in several matches that have been chronicled. Bell received a special Achievement Award in 2020.

Bell claimed that she had received medication for depression and anxiety in May 2016. "It's important for me to be open about this so people in a similar situation can see that they are not worthless and that they do have something to offer," she said.

Bell spoke openly with Jimmy Kimmel in August 2018 about why she wears scuba gloves when swimming. In the interview, she confessed to being concerned with the sensation of touching things with water-immerded, wrinkled fingers, otherwise known as "pruney fingers." With the gloves, she was able to swim with her children without fear of touching them.

Bell and her partner formed Hello Bello, a plant-based baby care service that sells plant-based baby care products, which is said to be both environmentally friendly and cost-effective. Hello Bello's estimated annual income was $26.1 million a year with 104 employees as of 2021.

Kristen Bell Career

Career

Bell appeared in her first appearance and was awarded both a banana and a tree in a suburban Detroit theater production of Raggedy Ann and Andy in 1992. She also started private acting lessons. She appeared in the locally shot film Polish Wedding in 1998 as an uncredited actress.

Bell left New York University in 2001 to appear as Becky Thatcher in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, a short-lived Broadway musical. She made her credited film debut in Pootie Tang the same year. "Don't ever want[ed] to come on Heroes," writer Zachary Quinto and Masi Oka, and writers from the series's set of "love to" on July 29, 2007.
