Early life and education
Kim Sang-beom was born in Seoul, South Korea, on July 7, 1989. He studied film and theater at Chung-Ang University, majoring in Film and Theater.

Kim's office revealed in February 2012 that he was suffering from degenerative arthritis as a result of his intense weight loss after training for his JTBC cable drama Padam Padam.

Career
Kim participated in the "Survival Star Audition" and was ranked 6th out of hundreds of competitors. However, because he was under the age of 20, he was unable to participate in the tournament. Kim was given many opportunities in television series "Survival Star Audition"; he appeared in multiple films. Kim appeared in High Kick! for his debut.
Kim first gained acclaim for his scene-stealing work in MBC's anniversary drama East of Eden, winning the Netizen Popularity Award at the Korea Drama Awards. He came to fame in 2009 after appearing as So Yi-jung in the hit drama Boys Over Flowers. He received even more accolade for his support for the melodrama Padam Padam (2011), a fantasy melodrama written by Noh Hee-kyung.
