Kristian "Kiko" Alonso, born August 14, 1990, is an American football linebacker for the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League (NFL).

In the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, he played college football at Oregon and was drafted by the Buffalo Bills.

Alonso missed his second season with the Bills due to a torn ACL and was then traded to the Philadelphia Eagles for halfback LeSean McCoy.

He was then traded to the Miami Dolphins, becoming an established starter for three years before being traded to the Saints once more following a turbulent season.

Early years

Carlos, Kiko Alonso's father, was born in Cuba but raised in Puerto Rico. Monica Alonso, his mother, is from Colombia. Kiko was born in Newton, Massachusetts. He has an older brother Carlos and a younger brother Lucas.

Kiko attended Los Gatos High School in Los Gatos, California. He led the De Anza League and Central Coast Section in tackles in his senior year (81 unasisted). In ten of his 12 games, he also posted double figures in tackles, finished third on the team in quarterback sackings, and led the Wildcats in receiving (35 catches, 559 yards). In 2007, he led Central Coast's sixth-ranked team to the league championship (10–1–1), with the team's lone loss coming against Gilroy (40–34) in the sectional semifinals.

He was named the No. 301 recruit by Rivals.com as the No. 1. In 2008, 47 students in the class of 2008 returned to school, behind Etienne Sabino (No. ). (No. 1) Dont'a Hightower (No. 2). Stevenson Sylvester (No. 15) and Stevenson Sylvester (No. 5) 26) is the American president. He accepted a scholarship from Utah in lieu of a scholarship request from Utah.

College career

Alonso attended the University of Oregon, where he played for the Ducks football team from 2008 to 2012. He spent the 2009 season as the Ducks' primary reserve middle linebacker after redshirting in 2008. He appeared in the final 12 games, totaling 13 of his 16 tackles unassisted. He was suspended from the team for the entire season in 2010 due to a DUI and other criminal offences. He returned to Oregon for the eighth time this season, finishing fourth among linebackers with 46 tackles, six tackles for loss, and two sacks. He was also named the 2012 Rose Bowl Defensive Player of the Game with one interception and five tackles, with five tackles for loss and five tackles. In his last season, he appeared in all 13 games and was named second-team all-conference champion. He made 87 tackles (62 solo, 25 assisted), with 16 tackles for loss, a sack, four interceptions, seven pass deflections, and two forced fumbles.

Alonso was arrested and charged with a DUI on February 19, 2010. He was suspended for the 2010 season. In May 2011, Alonso was arrested again on suspicion of trespassing, unlawful trespass, and mischief. The charges arose from a woman who called 911 to report that Alonso banged on her door and begged for permission to admit him to her house. According to reports close to him, Alonso thought he was breaking into his own house. He pleaded guilty to all of the charges. He was sentenced to 200 hours of community service as part of alcohol rehabilitation services, and he was also required to complete 200 hours of community service. After completing over community service and an alcohol awareness campaign, he was recalled to the Ducks football team in early September 2011.

Professional career

In the second round (46th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills selected Alonso. In 2013, Alonso was the fifth linebacker drafted.

The Buffalo Bills agreed to a four-year, $4.30 million deal, which also includes a signing bonus of $1.57 million, which was not disclosed.

Alonso was drafted as a backup for Nick Barnett and the starting middle linebacker for training camp. Alonso was the starting middle linebacker for the regular season, according to head coach Doug Marrone, as well as outside linebackers Nigel Bradham and Manny Lawson.

During a 27-24 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, Alonso had a season-high 22 combined tackles (nine solo) on week 6. Alonso made 159 tackles, four interceptions, four pass deflections, two suspended suspensions, and one forced fumble as a rookie in 2013 during all 16 games. Alonso had the third most tackles among all players in 2013, behind Vontaze Burfict and Paul Posluszny. In 2013, Alonso was the only defensive player selected for PFWA Rookie of the Year. Alonso was named PFWA Defensive Rookie of the Year on January 14, 2014. For 2014, Alonso was also selected to the NFL's All-Under-25 Team.

Alonso will be moved to the lower end of the weakside linebacker position for the 2014-2015 NFL season, according to Bill Whaley, who is a student at the University of On the 14th of September, Alonso will be moved to the lowerside linebacker position. However, Alonso tore his anterior cruciate ligament while working out in Oregon and missed the entire 2014 season, as a seven-to-nothing recovery was predicted. The Buffalo Bills traded Alonso to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for running back LeSean McCoy on March 10, 2015. Alonso was reunited with Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly, who was his head coach at Oregon at the time.

Alonso competed against Mychal Kendricks and DeMeco Ryans for a job as a starting inside linebacker during training camp. Alonso was named as a reserve inside linebacker for the regular season by head coach Chip Kelly, behind DeMeco Ryans and Mychal Kendricks.

Alonso sustained a Grade II sprain – a partial tear – of his repaired left anterior cruciate ligament during his Week 2 match against the Dallas Cowboys on September 20, 2015. Alonso was inactive for the next five games (Weeks 3–7). During the Eagles' 35-30 victory over the New York Giants, he had a season-high nine combined tackles in Week 17. He had 43 combined tackles (one solo), one interceptor, and one pass deflection in 11 games and one start on the season.

The Philadelphia Eagles traded Alonso, cornerback Byron Maxwell, and a first-round draft pick (13th overall) in the 2016 NFL Draft in exchange for the Dolphins' first round draft pick (8th overall) in the 2016 NFL Draft. Alonso was selected to start in middle linebacker training camp. Alonso was named the starting middle linebacker for the regular season by head coach Adam Gase, as well as Koa Misi and Jelani Jenkins.

During a 30-17 loss to the Tennessee Titans in Week 5, he had a season-high 12 combined tackles (eight solo) for the first time. With a 10-6 record and a playoff berth, the Miami Dolphins finished second in the AFC East, finishing second in the AFC East and securing a playoff spot. During their 30–12 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Wildcard Game on January 8, 2017, Alonso started his first season in playoff play and recorded six combined tackles.

The Miami Dolphins opened a first-round tender on Alonso as a restricted free agent on March 9, 2017. The Miami Dolphins signed Alonso to a four-year, $28.91 million contract with $18.50 million guaranteed and a signing bonus of $7.05 million.

Alonso was selected in the training camp as a starting linebacker. Adam Gase, the head coach, named Alonso the starting linebacker to begin the regular season. He started with strongside linebacker Lawrence Timmons and middle linebacker Mike Hull.

Alonso was chastised for a blow against Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, which put Flacco in concussion protocol in Week 8. Alonso should be suspended if necessary, but the league refused to suspend him. Alonso was fined $9,115 by the league on November 3, 2017 for a hit on Flacco. During a 29–13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on December 24, 2017, Alonso recorded a season-high 11 combined tackles (eight solo) on December 24, 2017. Alonso appeared in all 16 games in 2017 and had 115 combined tackles (79 solo), one pass deflection, and one dismissal.

In 2018, Alonso was named the starting strongside linebacker to start the regular season. He was introduced to rookie starting weakside linebacker Jerome Baker and middle linebacker Raekwon McMillan.

In the Dolphins' 20–12 victory over the New York Jets, Alonso recorded a season-high 13 solo tackles in Week 2. During a 28–2 victory over the Oakland Raiders in Week 3, Alonso made 15 combined tackles (seven solo) during a 28–2 victory over the Oakland Raiders this week.

Alonso has been chastised for missing quarterback hits. Since colliding with a falling Andrew Luck during a week 12 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, he received a personal foul foul penalty and subsequent fine. Alonso was suspended from the game after a scuffle broke out between the Bills and Dolphins after a similar assault on Josh Allen during a week 17 tilt against the Buffalo Bills.

Alonso was traded to the New Orleans Saints on September 1, 2019 in exchange for linebacker Vince Biegel. Alonso's total tackles on the season were 31. During the Saints' playoff game against the Minnesota Vikings, he sustained another anterior cruciate ligament injury. At the start of training camp on August 1, 2020, he was placed on the active/physically inability to perform list (PUP). On September 5, 2020, he was added to the reserve/PUP list at the start of the regular season.

Alonso was traded to the San Francisco 49ers in 2021 NFL Draft with a conditional fifth-round pick in exchange for LB Kwon Alexander on November 2, 2020. Alonso had been eligible to practice with the Saints and 49ers since October 19, 2020, but the 49ers refused to activate him from the PUP list until November 14, 2020, so he was ineligible to return during the season. On November 23, he was released with a failed physical appearance.

Alonso signed with the New Orleans Saints on August 5, 2022.

After signing with the New Orleans Saints the day before, Alonso announced his retirement from professional football on August 6, 2022.
