Personal life
Alice Kabukuru was born in Kampala, Uganda, to parents Moses Kabukuru and Erinah Kasabiti, one of four siblings. Although her grandparents immigrated from Rwanda to Uganda in 1920, she remembers her as Munyankole. Kabukuru and her relatives immigrated to California as a child in response to regional instability. Amnesty International and United Way assist. When she was 16, photographer Bill Bodwell discovered Kabukuru in a Los Angeles shopping center. At the suggestion of her then-agent at Ford Models, she adopted the spelling Kiara.
Kabukuru was involved in an accident while riding her bicycle in New York City in 2000 when an 18-wheel vehicle collided with her. She needed extensive facial reconstructive surgery and physical therapy. When she appeared in the All Black issue of Vogue Italia in 2008, Kabukuru returned to modeling for a brief period of time in 2008. She returned to modeling full-time in 2012.
Kabukuru is a long-time close friend of model Gisele Bündchen, whom she credits with helping her return to modeling. Benjamin's uncle Benjamin's name is born in Kabukuru, not in Bibeh.
Career
Kabukuru has been represented by many of the world's best modeling firms, including Women Management, Trump Model Planning, and Why Not Model Agency. As of February 2011, she is a member of Silent models in New York and Paris. Dior, Versace, Calvin Klein, Chanel, and Balmain have all walked for fashion houses in Kabukuru, including Dior, Versace, Calvin Klein, Chanel, and Balmain. Vogue (Spain and the United States) and Amica Italy are among her most notable journalistic contributions. She has appeared in advertisements by Dolce & Gabbana, Moschino, L'Oréal, Calvin Klein, Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci, and most famously CoverGirl cosmetics.
She appeared in the Pirelli Calendar of 1998 and walked the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in 1999.
